Love the Resurrected Lord 4.22.18

Sunday's Message
April 22, 2018

LOVE THE RESURRECTED LORD

In Greek mythology Adonis was sought by Persephone, goddess of the underworld, and by Aphrodite, goddess of love.  The king of the gods, Zeus, decreed that Adonis would spend 1/3 of the year with each goddess and 1/3 of the year with the goddess of his choice.  He was eventually killed by a wild boar.  When Aphrodite wept over him her tears mingled with his blood to give birth to the brilliant scarlet anemone flower.  Greek women would plant “Adonis Gardens” in which they’d grow short-lived flowers in small pots that would soon die in the summer sun.

In the late 1800s the Scottish anthropologist Sir James George Frazer wrote that Adonis and Jesus were parts of the dying/resurrected god myth.  But now scholars note that Fraser used sloppy research.  Adonis was not dead when he entered Persephone’s underworld but a living being held captive in the realm of the dead.  Also, once he died by the boar’s tusk he did not rise again.

Jesus is the true extension of God who died and was raised from the dead.  When you love him you love a resurrected Lord.  Sunday I’m preaching on “Love the Resurrected Lord” from John 21:15-22.  Please come to church and learn some surprising things about a familiar passage.  We must make sure we truly love Jesus, a love that leads to feeding his sheep.  We’ll also learn not to compare ourselves with other Christians.  We must simply love Jesus because he’s worthy of our love – and he’s alive!

A week from this Sunday is our Spring Celebration after Bible Study and church.  Don’t forget to bring lots of food for our potluck and lawn chairs and to sign up for basketball, volleyball, or to bring board games.  It will be a great time to get to know people, to have fun and to celebrate the Lord of resurrection!

With love in Christ,

Dr. Jim Meek
