Sunday's Message
April 15, 2018

RECEIVE RESURRECTION POWER

On May 23, 2013 a dinner was held honoring the American prisoners from the Viet Nam War.  It was a celebration of a dinner that had been held at the White House forty years earlier when the POWs came home.  That was the largest White House dinner in history.  The attendance of 1,300 included the POWs, their families, President Nixon, Bob Hope as emcee, John Wayne and Irvin Berlin who wrote, “God Bless America.”  In fact, Berlin led the participants in the singing of his song.  One of the POWs was Alvarez, the first American prisoner taken in the war.  He had survived 8 ½ years of Viet Cong imprisonment!  One of the POWs said, “Courage is fear that says its prayers.”  These men coming home had been a kind of resurrection.  Their patriotism, love and endurance revealed American power at its best.

Sunday I’m preaching on “Receive Resurrection Power” from Luke 24:36-49.  Jesus told his disciples that they were to stay in Jerusalem until they received power from on high.  In other words, they were not to make a move without the Holy Spirit.  After living a life of dependence on the Holy Spirit they would be rewarded with a great Messianic Banquet (Luke 13:29)!

Jesus didn’t begin his ministry until the Holy Spirit came down on him at his baptism (Luke 3:22-23).

What makes us think we can do anything without the Spirit working through us?  Let’s let God love through us, work through us and enjoy life through us.  Come to worship Sunday and find out how to do that!  While you’re at it, please come at 9:00 for Sunday School.  We need you and you need us!

With love in Christ,
Dr. Jim Meek

PULSE YOUTH UPDATE

Message from the Youth Leader:

Last Sunday we studied Luke 9: 21-27 and had an interesting conversation surrounding it:

“Then [Jesus] said to them all: “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me.  For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will save it. What good is it for someone to gain the whole world, and yet lose or forfeit their very self? Whoever is ashamed of me and my words, the Son of Man will be ashamed of them when he comes in his glory and in the glory of the Father and of the holy angels” Luke 9:23-26.

What exactly are we called to do and how are we to tackle this thing called life as a follower of Jesus?  The kids each concluded that Jesus was asking them to give up everything they found fun, eliminate the parts of their lives that they enjoyed, and take up a posture of servitude and obedience in a life of obligation and toil.  This understanding very much reminded me of how I viewed the church and God’s calling when I was fresh out of high school.  As usual, God’s calling is a little more nuanced, and our understanding is a little too rigid.  God built each of us with different gifts and passions and each can and should be used to give glory to God.  One of my students loves art and writing, another is an avid gamer, and another likes to dance; each of these activities alone can be all consuming and take away from our devotion to God or can be used to serve the Kingdom and express our gratitude and willingness to obey the calling God has bestowed.  What the students had yet to understand, is that God wants them to explore their passions, and to join them as they do it.  God calls us to give up everything that we desire more than Him and to allow Him to lead us in fulfilling the purposes he built us for.  This is the purpose of the sanctification God calls us into from the moment we are born again.

Upcoming Lessons:

  • Sunday 4/15: Luke 9:28-36: Who has seen the face of God?
  • Wednesday 4/8: Song of Songs: Someday we will meet again… and finally get to this lesson!

Event Updates:

  • May 30th: Youth Cooks Wednesday Night Dinner!

Prayer Requests:

  • Summer Camp: It’s expensive, it’s exciting, and it comes, sooner than it seems.  We need prayer for all that comes with this wonderful endeavor.  I know that God will provide, I pray that he will help me to be open to his leading and provision.
