Sunday's Message
December 3, 2017

IN SIN FIND A SAVIOR

This month I’m preaching on “Celebrate Christ’s Coming.”  God loves for us to celebrate!  He commanded that Israel have special feast days each year and a Sabbath rest each week.  So, let’s celebrate Christ’s birth!  And let’s invite others to join us in our celebration so that they can come to know the reason for the season.

Sunday I’m preaching on “In Sin Find a Savior” from Genesis 3:1-15.  When man and woman gave in to the temptation of the Satan-filled serpent, the world fell.  But God told the woman that her seed (implying a man born of a virgin) would bruise the serpent’s head, although the serpent would bruise the heel of the woman’s seed.  Paul said that the prophetic seed in Scripture is Christ (Galatians 3:16).  In other words, Satan would attack Jesus through the cross, but Jesus would deal Satan a mortal blow by crucifying our sins and being raised to give us abundant, eternal life.  Sunday we’ll be lighting the Hope Candle in honor of the hope that the seed of woman brings to sinful man.

Nancie and I saw the wonderful movie, The Man Who Invented Christmas about Charles Dickens.  The title is provocative.  Christ is the reason for the season.  But Christmas was a slightly celebrated holiday in England and America when Dickens wrote, A Christmas Carol.  His short story helped Christmas become one of our great holidays.

Dickens, in thinking about the character of Scrooge, asked himself if an evil man can truly change.  He concluded that he could, and thus he wrote the inspiring classic.  What the movie failed to point out is that Dickens was a dedicated Christian.  Scrooge in essence became born again.  Jesus indeed can change a critical miser into a gracious, caring human.  Won’t you let Christ change you this Christmas?  Find a savior not only from sin, but from a spiteful attitude and broken relationships.  We often get into a “Bah, humbug!” mood at Christmas when Jesus wants us to sing, “Joy to the world, the Lord is come!”

Love,
Dr. Jim Meek
