Sunday's Message
June 10, 2018

HONOR THE BANNER OF GOD'S PRESENCE

June 14 is Flag Day.  Sunday I’m preaching on “Honor the Banner of God’s Presence” from Psalm 60.  In the War of 1812 the British set fire to Washington D.C., burning the Capitol, the Treasury and the President’s house.  Then England bombed Baltimore for 25 hours.  A lawyer named Francis Scott Key watched the bombardment of Fort McHenry.  During the night the red flames seemed to signal that the British had destroyed the fort and taken Baltimore.  But the next morning when he saw that the American flag still flew over the fort he knew that the Americans had won.  Key wrote a poem and set it to a popular tune. His brother distributed the song under the name, “The Defense of Fort McHenry.”  We now call it “The Star-Spangled Banner.”  Part of the second verse reads:

Praise the power that hath made and preserved us a nation.
Then conquer we must if our cause it is just.
And this be our motto: “In God is Our Trust!”
And the star spangled banner in triumph shall wave
O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave.

In Psalm 60 David teaches us to raise a banner of respect for God and others.  In verses 3-5 he writes:

You have made your people experience hardship. . .
You have given a banner to those who fear you
That it may be displayed because of the truth.

Banners were raised to rally the troops.  God wants us to raise the banner of respecting God and others, going forth as an army to defeat Satan.  This requires suffering and sacrifice, but it builds an eternal kingdom.  We can then raise the banner of victory.  In verse 12 David sings

Through God we shall do valiantly
And it is he who will tread down our adversaries.

Please come Sunday and celebrate with us the banner of God’s presence.  Whether we’re contemplating spiritual victory in Jesus or victory in our nation, we can be confident in God’s grace.  I just got out of the hospital today (Thursday) because of kidney stones.  On Wednesday morning I was in extreme pain.  But while in the hospital I was able to pray with a doctor to receive Christ!  I’ll be going back in ten days to get the stones surgically removed.  God will supply the victory!  Sometimes we simply need to wait on him and believe that “all things work together for good for those who love the Lord” (Romans 8:28).  But while we wait we can raise the banner of the cross and rally the troops to claim victory in Jesus.

Don’t forget our Church Council Meeting this Sunday at 6:00 p.m.  We’ll be looking at our new Bylaws proposal.  Please pray for this process.  God has been working miraculously in our church and in people’s lives.  But there has also been a lot of suffering and mourning.  Let’s raise the banner of love and hope.  Remember, “His banner over me is love” (Song of Solomon 2:4)

Love,
Dr. Jim Meek

We are Called to Give Ourselves Fully over to God and the Work He has Called Us To Do

“[Jesus] told them, ‘The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few. Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field. Go! I am sending you out like lambs among wolves. Do not take a purse or bag or sandals; and do not greet anyone on the road.’” Luke 10:1-24, NIV

Studying this verse, and the rest of Luke 10:1-24, gives us a clear picture of what Jesus asks of those who follow him.  The work He has called us to is great in size and importance; there are countless who have need of the Good News and without servants to harvest the crop, the fruit rots on the vine.  The work requires dependence upon Godly provision in a world that is seeks only to enrich the self.  We should be willing to accept the help of unbelievers in our cause that they may come to join us in our work.  We should expect some people to turn us away, to curse at us, or to be apathetic; we are to walk away and not let those experiences deter us from our work.  When we come in from the labor to celebrate a good harvest, we are to rejoice not in our ability to work, but in the fact that we ourselves are part of the crop that has come in.  What a blessing it is to be a member of both redeemed humanity and God’s trusted servants simultaneously.

We pray for our church to grow, we invite our community to join us, we put on events to reach the lost.  Each is piece in the puzzle that pictures a growing church, and yet there is still more.  In the book of Joshua, we see God provide to the Israelites a surprising victory over the city of Jericho when they depended on him and surprising defeat over Ai when even a single part of their body wasn’t fully committed to God.  We are called in much the same way: to give ourselves fully over to God and the work he has called us to.  When we do, we will find victory in following God.  When we hold even the smallest portion back, when we allow ourselves to be deluded into only becoming lukewarm servants, God withdraws his blessing, and we must fend for ourselves.  Teaching this lesson brought this message into focus very clearly.  My prayers have adjusted accordingly for God’s work in my life.

MISSION TRIP TO TIJUANA, MEXICO
JUNE 15-22 2018

Our Missions Team is heading off to partner with Pastor Carlos of La Roca Ministries of Tijuana, Mexico. The team will spend several days helping the La Roca Missionaries work in the field to minister to the physical and spiritual needs of men, women, and children in the local area.

La Roca Ministries reaches out to touch people’s lives that are devastated by poverty, neglect, and despair. These people find themselves enslaved to drugs and alcohol and living in the streets of Tijuana, Mexico. Our desire is to mirror Christ’s compassion and concern to these people.

It has been said, “give a person a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach him how to fish and you feed him for a life.” We believed in “teaching people how to fish”. We want to see lives transformed and we believe that comes from a personal relationship with Jesus Christ.

Our program seeks to help rebuild lives by making disciples; raising up men, women, and teens as future leaders and missionaries, and sending them forth to advance the Kingdom of God on earth. Thank you for your prayers and financial support. You are making a difference today and for eternity! ≈ Pastor Carlos

These are a few things that we need in preparation for the parade:
