WALK IN HEAVEN'S PLAN

Alexander the Great had a plan to conquer the world and unite all people.  He died in a drunken stupor.  Julius Caesar had a plan to unite the Roman world under his benign dictatorship.  He was murdered by Senators in public.  Napoleon planned on conquering Europe.  He died in bitter exile on the tiny island of Saint Helena off the coast of Africa.  All three of these men were brilliant planners but “the best laid schemes of mice and men” often go astray.  What we need to do is walk in heaven’s plan.  I’ll be preaching on that this Sunday from Matthew 16:13-19.

The first order of business is to know Jesus intimately.  He said in John 8:58 that before Abraham was “I am.”  That’s what the name of God means.  He was saying that he was the voice that spoke to Moses out of the burning bush.  I believe he was the one who walked with Adam and Eve in Eden during the cool of the day.  Jesus is an extension of God who has come to earth.  Thus he is the Son of God.  And he is Messiah – the Christ, the Anointed One, the long awaited prophet, priest and king.  Know him intimately.  Walk and talk with him.  Listen to him!  Love him passionately.

Then, free people for heaven.  The keys that Jesus gave to Peter he gives to all his disciples.  He told Peter that he had the power to loosen what had already been loosed in heaven and to bind what had already been bound in heaven.  In Matthew 18:18 he gave that power to all the disciples.  Thus we all have the power through the Spirit of Christ to open heaven’s gates and invite people in.  Or, by ignoring people, we have the right to bind them from hearing the good news.  Let’s walk in heaven’s plans and bring people to Christ, nurturing them in the love of Christ.  Join us this Sunday as we learn how to do that.

Bill Raiford passed away last Monday night.  He had been at Bible Study the previous Wednesday night.  When he had arrived everyone applauded.  He had also been in Sunday School last Sunday and worship.  On Monday he was able to eat at his daughter’s house.  Then he went home and quietly went to his ultimate home, heaven.  Join us for his Memorial Service at El Camino on Saturday, March 24, at 5:30.  Pray for his family, and honor a man who walked in heaven’s plan.

With love in Christ,
Dr. Jim Meek

WE ARE STARTING A LIBRARY MINISTRY

FROM YOUR YOUTH DIRECTOR

Message from the Youth Leader:

Last night we studied the book of Psalms.  Psalms contains 150 Hebrew poems and songs spanning the age of David through the Israelite return from Babylon.  There are two main themes that run throughout the book, lament for the situation the author is in, and praise to God for the good things that God has done.  The lesson of this book is to humble yourself before God.  When bad things happen, it is completely appropriate to be sad, to cry out to God.  When good things happen, we should seek to thank God for what he has done in our lives.

In each case we are called to avoid the trap of experiencing the feelings of joy and sadness and stopping there.  In our society that has denied God, we often see people whom get lost in grief or sadness and never seem to recover.  We also see those who seek after happiness and self-satisfaction without regard to the Source of true joy.

God wants us to have these examples of how to respond to the good, the bad and the ugly of living in a fallen world.  God commended Job for wrestling with the loss of his wealth and family (Job) and He exemplified this wrestling when He himself was faced with the certainty of a painful death on the cross (Gospel accounts of the Garden of Gethsemane).  We must not be hindered by our pride from experiencing the trials and joys of this life, nor should we forget the source and sustainer of our life.  While our situations may change, God’s love is constant, and we can always take refuge and give thanks for that.

Upcoming Lessons:

  • Sunday 3/11: Luke 8:40-56: What is the power of belief?

  • Wednesday 3/14: Proverbs: Upon whose wisdom do you depend? Google?

Event Updates:

  • 2/16/2018; Family Game Night!

  • 3/30-31/2018, “Exit” the Lock-In!

Prayer Requests:

  • Wisdom in how to be helpful.  One of the difficulties of being in ministry is that you are constantly seeing people in need, all of whom need help.  As my time is limited, whom do I help?  As my resources are limited, how much can I commit to help?  As I am not my own, how much can I ask my family to take on for the sake of helping others?

  • Resolution for the situations my students are in.  Life’s tough, and sometimes the toughness doesn’t seem to have an endpoint.  I praise God that our lessons for the last few weeks have addressed these troubles, but pray that the troubles may cease.

Greg Horton
Youth Director
