Sunday's Message
March 25, 2018

WALK IN TRIUMPH

This month I’ve been preaching on walking with Jesus.  Sunday I’m preaching on “Walk in Triumph” from Matthew 21:1-11.

At the end of the movie, Patton, the general relates that victorious Caesars would have a triumphant parade through the streets of Rome.  In the emperor’s chariot stood a slave who held a laurel wreath above the conqueror’s head while whispering in his ear a warning that all glory is fleeting.  The laurel wreath was known to fade quickly.  In 1 Peter 5:4 the apostle wrote that dedicated Christians will receive a crown that never fades.  As we walk triumphantly with Jesus we have victory in our home, finances, health, work and relationships.  We will also have victory in heaven and the new heaven and earth.  Please join us this Palm Sunday as we contemplate being victorious with Jesus.  Included in our service will be our Children’s Musical, Christ the Lord is Risen Today.  Then, on Good Friday, we’ll experience the Stations of the Cross starting at 5:00 p.m.  The stations will be new, so come and invite others.

This Saturday at 5:30 we’ll have a Memorial Service for Christ’s wonderful servant, Bill Raiford.  If you can help supply refreshments please call the church.

Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem was a sneak preview of what it will be like when Jesus comes again in victory, bringing with him those who have served him.  I’m looking forward to being with Bill when those saints go marching in.

Love,
Jim Meek

FROM YOUR YOUTH DIRECTOR

Message from the Youth Leader:

The musical is coming, the musical is coming!  For those of you who do not already know, our children’s department has paired with our wonderfully amazing drama department to put together an ambitious children’s musical to celebrate Jesus’s triumphant return to Jerusalem on Palm Sunday.  The youth department is involved as the narrators to tie the songs together, and it has been great fun for us to be involved and watch the children grow and improve.  We are all very excited to see our hard work pay off.

One of my New Year’s resolutions for the Youth Department is to structure our lesson times and bring our focus to learning with and about Jesus.  To do that, we’ve been working through the book of Luke on Sundays and progressively through the bible on Wednesday nights.  We do games and have plenty of discussion, and the whole process has been enriching to myself and the students, but… I forgot how much fun a break in the routine could be.  At first, practicing for the musical was an annoying interruption to my carefully crafted study plan, but last night reminded me just how much fun we can have when we shed the routine for a night and participate in a different activity.  We will most certainly return to our regular programming as soon as possible, as I don’t want randomness to become the norm, but maybe, just maybe I’ll see if I can start planning in a few more of these random moments in.

Upcoming Lessons:

  • Sunday 3/25: Luke 9:40-56: With great power comes great responsibility…
  • Wednesday 3/28: The musical is completed… Cast party!

Event Updates:

  • 3/30-31/2018, “Exit” the Lock-In! 5PM-9AM

Prayer Requests:

  • Praise be to the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob!I am constantly impressed with how awesome our youth and children are.  Please say a special praise this week for our wonderful kids!
  • Our Fair Musical.  As anyone who’s been involved in musical productions knows, the last week or so is always full of last minute tasks and practice, butterflies of excitement and practice, exhaustion and practice.  Please pray for all who are involved in the musical to have continued strength, sanity, and sustenance as we anticipate the date this Sunday.

Greg Horton,
Youth Director

FUNERAL SERVICE Honoring George Tyson

George Tyson, a long time member of El Camino, passed away on March 15th, 2018.  George had been homebound for a number of years, but still cherished El Camino Baptist Church.  Upon making this known to some of the members of the food closet, many shared warm stories recounting George's hard work with that ministry, and how George would still attend Sunday School even when his hearing prevented him from understanding the worship service.  There is an open invitation to attend the Memorial and the Funeral both occurring this week.  See the information below:
