REMEMBER GOD

REMEMBER GOD

People are fascinated with the royal wedding going on in England. There was a brief time when England had no king or queen. Oliver Cromwell was Lord Protector of the Commonwealth of England, Scotland and Ireland from 1653 to 1658. The king had been beheaded by Parliament and eventually Cromwell was given the right to rule. He was fiercely dedicated to God and his word. When fighting against the Scots his battle cry was “The Lord of Hosts!” taken from Psalm 46:

The Lord of Hosts is with us,

The God of Jacob our refuge!

After a stunning victory in the early morning the sun began to rise over the North Sea. Cromwell was heard to say:

                                                    Now let God arise

And our enemies be scattered (Psalm 158).

Cromwell taught his troops to remember God. In a recent poll in England he was considered one of the ten greatest Britons of all time.

Sunday I will be preaching on “Remember God” from Judges 8:28-35. Israel was sinking into immorality after Gideon’s death because the people didn’t remember God. Our nation is taking the same path. Pray that God will use Sunday’s sermon to help us remember God’s heroes and remember the Lord. So often we emphasize the faults of our leaders, our military and those who lived in the past. The result is we have no heroes (unless they are fictional heroes who fly around in their underwear) or we imitate our heroes’ faults. Let us emphasize the positive traits of those who’ve gone before us and those who lead us today. And let’s remember God in his great mercy, love and power!

    With love in Christ,

     Dr. Jim Meek

Pulse Youth Updates:

Message from the Youth Leader:

I looked, and I saw a windstorm coming out of the north—an immense cloud with flashing lightning and surrounded by brilliant light. The center of the fire looked like glowing metal, and in the fire was what looked like four living creatures. In appearance their form was human, but each of them had four faces and four wings. Their legs were straight; their feet were like those of a calf and gleamed like burnished bronze. Under their wings on their four sides they had human hands. All four of them had faces and wings, and the wings of one touched the wings of another. Each one went straight ahead; they did not turn as they moved. (Ezekiel 1:4-9)

I had the students try to draw this otherworldly chariot as I was reading this passage, and let’s just say the results were as varied as the description is strange. As the book carries on we see God’s presence, riding atop His chariot, command Ezekiel to do some very strange things in his prophesies against Jerusalem. God gives Ezekiel a message filled with wrath and judgement for Israel, it’s neighbors, and Jerusalem itself.

Ezekiel’s visions pivot as he brings a message of hope for future redemption. Lauren Daigle’s song “Come Alive” draws upon Ezekiel 37 with “…as we call out to dry bones come alive, come alive,” wherein God breathes upon a valley of bones and those that were once dead are returned to life. God shows Ezekiel his ultimate power to defeat evil as he prophesies against Gog, a representation of human evil; and God provides his redemption in the building of a new temple, provision of a new King, and the creation of a new Eden in the resurrection of the Dead Sea. Almost six-hundred years before Jesus’s birth, we are given a foreshadowing of the Book of Revelations. Even in the midst of terror and utter destruction, as in Ezekiel’s case with the fall of Jerusalem and the Babylonian Exile, God does not abandon his people. We need only look at our own lives with the same form of future hindsight to see God’s work to provide for us, his people.

Upcoming Lessons:

  • Sunday 5/20: Luke 9:51-56: “Do you want us to call down fire to destroy them?”

  • Wednesday 5/23: Daniel: I am so excited! A book I knew before this study!

  • May 30th: Youth Cooks Wednesday Night Dinner!

  • June 2nd: Vision Conference hosted by Church of Cypress

Prayer Requests:

  • Summer Camp: God has revealed to me a weekend that isn’t tied up in meetings or trips when we can do a carwash! Please pray for us as we work to pay for summer camp.

  • Youth Ministry Team: We will be studying a leadership development book together for the purposes of preparing our youth ministry for growth. Please pray God will lead us to what he wants for us to learn, and challenges us with how we must change.
