REMEMBER THE  FALLEN

On November 19, 1863 Abraham Lincoln addressed a crowd at a battlefield in Gettysburg where there had been 46,000 casualties. A famous orator spoke for two hours.

Then the Baltimore Glee Club sang. Then the President gave a short speech. He thought it was a failure, but it has become known as one of the greatest speeches of all time. He gave it to memorialize those who had fallen in battle.

Sunday I’m preaching on “Remember the Fallen” from 2 Samuel 1:17-27. King Saul had been chasing David for ten years, thinking the young man was a threat to his throne. Then the king killed himself in the battle at Mount Gilboah to prevent the Philistines from taking him alive. David’s dearest friend Jonathan, the king’s son, also died. When David got the news, he composed and sang for posterity one of the most beautiful songs in all of history. In reading this passage we realize that we should teach our children to remember the fallen, and that we should personally honor the fallen.

You may enjoy the time off this Memorial Day. And you may take advantage of a Memorial Day sale (where would our economy be without holidays?). But let’s take time to remember those who gave their lives for our country. As Christians we may also remember those who gave their lives for the faith. Our nation and our faith were built with the blood of martyrs. Let’s thank God for them and let’s teach generations to come to honor and emulate those who have had a sacrificial spirit. In doing so we will honor the one who offered the ultimate sacrifice on Calvary.

With love in Christ,

Dr. Jim Meek
