Sunday's Message
August 12, 2018

ENJOY CHRIST'S PRESENCE

Bill W. got into drinking alcohol during World War I.  When he got out of the army he made lots of money and loved playing golf.  He looked like a tan, successful businessman.  But he became increasingly a prisoner of alcohol.  The stock market crashed and his wife had to get a job to make ends meet.  He would steal from her purse to secretly purchase more alcohol.  He served time in the hospital.  The doctors figured he would die an early death from drinking.  Then one day an old drinking buddy showed up at his door.  The man was bright eyed and fresh faced.  He said that he no longer drank.  He had “gotten religion!”  Bill ended up giving his life to God as well.  He became a new man, free from drink.  He and his wife began helping others find freedom in God.  They were God’s tools for making AA an international support group.

Christ can deliver us from anything Satan hurls at us.  The key is to forget about self and to be immersed in enjoying Christ.  This Sunday I’m preaching on “Enjoy Christ’s Presence” from John 15:1-11.  We’ll be celebrating the Lord’s Supper as Christ commanded (Luke 22:19; 1 Corinthians 11:24-25).  Then, in the sermon, we’ll look at what Christ told his disciples on his way from that upper room to the Garden of Gethsemane.  It’s life-changing!  Please join us!

Thanks for your prayers!  God has really blessed me during my kidney stone ordeal.  I appreciate everyone’s love.  And the thing I appreciate most is your faithfulness in Sunday School, worship and Wednesday night Bible Study.  I’m looking forward to serving with you through Christ’s power for many years to come.

With love in Christ,
Dr. Jim Meek

YOUTH MINISTRY UPDATE

The Whole Bible is Relevant to Us Today

Much of the Old Testament is focused upon the nation of Israel, and later Judah as well.  Why should we care what Israel did thousands of years ago?  Don’t we have Jesus?  Our God came to us told us His laws and teachings and provided the Holy Spirit to help us learn and follow.  We seem have a pretty clear picture of the character of God through the short life of Jesus, so why should we read about His dealings with the nation of Israel?

Besides the prophesies that validate Jesus, the example Jesus provided of being versed in scripture, and having a greater understanding of the history of God’s interaction on earth, we can use the trials of Israel as a character study for how God works in our own lives.  Nearly every story about the nations of Israel and Judah can be extrapolated into a parable with morals and principles that work on a personal level.  As the Israelites trusted God abundantly and crossed the Red Sea on dry land, so also may we participate in miracles when we trust God to work.  As the Israelites were continually warned and continually chose to follow other Gods, so too can we miss the clear warning signs God provides and choose our own downfall.  As the Jews returned from the Babylonian exile and rebuilt the things that made them feel like God was near, so too can we choose to interact with the things of God without being close to God Himself.

The Book of Joel is a perfect example of warnings for the nation in the past being warnings for the reader in the future.  Joel talks of destruction past, and how repentance is the way back to God.  He describes future destruction and how it can be averted by giving up wickedness and choosing God’s ways.  Joel describes Jesus’s promises of returning to defeat evil and restore Creation.  Each of these stories seem to provide us, the readers, with reminders for how we are to live our own lives.  These may have been written for Israel, but God doesn’t waste ink, so God made sure they still apply today.

Upcoming Lessons:

  • Sunday 8/12: Luke 12:13-21: “Where do we find our true value?”
  • Wednesday 8/15: The Book of Amos: “He can rebuild it, he has the technology.”

Event Updates:

  • August 29th: Fifth Wednesday, Youth Serves Dinner Fundraiser
  • September 15th-16th:  End of Summer Lock-In

Prayer Requests:

  • Focus: As we reach the end of summer vacation, we reach the end of the interest that summer fun holds.  We pray for focus and energy as we spend our days.
  • End of Summer Lock-In: God has placed a burden upon my heart that growth is coming.  I ask that you would pray for our faithfulness to depend on God when the challenges of growth come.

Youth Director

A REPRISE OF SUMMERTIME FUN!

JUNE 15-22 2018
MISSION TRIP TO TIJUANA, MEXICO

Our Missions team partnered with Pastor Carlos of La Roca Ministries of Tijuana, Mexico. The team spent several days helping the La Roca Missionaries work in the field to minister to the physical and spiritual needs of men, women, and children in the local area.

La Roca Ministries reaches out to touch people’s lives that are devastated by poverty, neglect, and despair. These people find themselves enslaved to drugs and alcohol and living in the streets of Tijuana, Mexico. Our desire is to mirror Christ’s compassion and concern to these people.

It has been said, “give a person a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach him how to fish and you feed him for a life.” We believed in “teaching people how to fish”. We want to see lives transformed and we believe that comes from a personal relationship with Jesus Christ.

Our program seeks to help rebuild lives by making disciples; raising up men, women, and teens as future leaders and missionaries, and sending them forth to advance the Kingdom of God on earth. Thank you for your prayers and financial support. You are making a difference today and for eternity! ≈ Pastor Carlos

GAME ON!
VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL

Our Vacation Bible School Was A Huge Success! We had a total enrollment of 126 for this event. 12 Decisions were made to receive Christ as Lord and Savior. Many of our workers spent months preparing for Game On. Much of the work was accomplished behind the scenes that would transform our facility to represent the theme. We had Bible classes for pre-k, children, youth, and adults. Everyone enjoyed the MUSIC, CRAFTS, SNACKS, AND RECREATION.
