Sunday's Message
August 19, 2018

ENJOY THE PROSPECTS OF HEAVEN

Friends and family!  What an awesome combination!  Last Sunday my oldest son, his wife and their children showed up for worship at El Camino Baptist Church.  When I saw my oldest grandson I started crying with joy.  Then I discovered that two couples showed up from the church in Reno where I was pastor.  I hadn’t seen them in over 30 years!  Then I cried again!  The next day two people from my church in Livermore came over for lunch.  The next morning a widow from Livermore texted me and my former secretary from Livermore phoned me.  Today I’m thinking about how wonderful heaven will be when I’ll be with all my friends from all the churches where I’ve been pastor.  Plus I’ll be with my wonderful family.  I remember talking with my mom about heaven before she died.  I’m so looking forward to heaven, and I’m working through God’s power to take as many people as possible with me!

Sunday I’m preaching on “Enjoy the Prospects of Heaven” from John 14:1-13.  Jesus has just had the Lord’s Supper with his disciples, and he’s speaking to them about assurance of heaven, about who he is and how he’ll answer their prayers.  You see, heaven is where Jesus will be in all his love and glory.  To know him is to know heaven.  And to know him is to have the very resources of heaven for answering your prayers.  This is the essence of joy!

I loved teaching in Sunday School and preaching at El Camino last Sunday!  And I’m looking forward to teaching this Wednesday night as we dig deeper into the greatest book ever written: The Good News According to John.

With love in Christ,
Dr. Jim Meek

YOUTH MINISTRY UPDATE

The Book of Amos is very reminiscent of what we would later hear from Jesus:

“For I know how many are your offenses and how great your sins. There are those who oppress the innocent and take bribes and deprive the poor of justice in the courts. Therefore the prudent keep quiet in such times, for the times are evil. Seek good, not evil, that you may live. Then the Lord God Almighty will be with you, just as you say he is. Hate evil, love good; maintain justice in the courts. Perhaps the Lord God Almighty will have mercy on the remnant of Joseph.” Amos 5:12-15 NIV

“There is nothing concealed that will not be disclosed, or hidden that will not be made known. What you have said in the dark will be heard in the daylight, and what you have whispered in the ear in the inner rooms will be proclaimed from the roofs.” Luke 12:2-3 NIV

In each passage God speaks to confront the hypocrisy of His people. God is not impressed by a show of faith, nor work done for him, nor any amount of success or wealth. Moses was given the Ten Commandments to explain what God expects, but when His people didn’t seem to get the message, Jesus summarized the ten down to two:

“‘Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’ The second is this: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no commandment greater than these.” Mark 12:29-31

If we are hoping to earn our way into heaven, we are doing it wrong. If we are seeking glory for the good works God has called us to, we are doing it wrong. If we seek pleasure, comfort or entertainment over justice, righteousness or love, we are doing it wrong. These are all examples of hypocrisy we so readily fall into, me included, but God expects more from us. From Genesis to Revelation, Moses to Amos to Jesus, Layperson to Pastor, God gives us plenty of opportunities to confront our own hypocrisy. As iron sharpens iron, let us encourage each other to be accountable to our God and love Him and each other as we have been called.

Upcoming Lessons:

  • Sunday 8/19: Luke 12:13-21: “Where do we find our true value?”

  • Wednesday 8/22: The Book of Amos: “He can rebuild it, he has the technology.”

Event Updates:

  • August 29th: Fifth Wednesday, Youth Serves Dinner Fundraiser

  • September 8th: Lasertag Fellowship

  • September 15th-16th: End of Summer Lock-In

Prayer Requests:

  • School: School started Thursday for most of our kids. Please pray for them as they go into the mission field. We pray that they would be the influencers, not the influenced.

  • End of Summer Lock-In: I feel incredibly inadequate for the plans God has placed in my lap to accomplish. Please pray that I could have greater trust and dependence upon God as I seek to do the works put before me.

Youth Director

5TH SUNDAY POTLUCK
& MINISTRY FAIRE
September 30
12:00 pm

Dear Friend,

If you're a ministry leader, committee member or teacher at El Camino Baptist Church we'd like you to participate in our Ministry Faire on September 30, during our 5th Sunday potluck.

We will have tables set up around the inside of the worship center on which you can let the church know about your ministry.  Your booth can simply have information about your ministry or class, or it can also ask for volunteers. You can have sign-up sheets, pamphlets and/or a suggestion box. We can help you with ideas and materials if you'd like.

Please call the church office or text me at 925 784-0402 by September 23, if you would like a booth.

This should be fun and it should help our people know what we have to offer, what our church is doing and where people can make a difference.

Let's pray for a great Ministry Faire and a church that pleases our Lord.

With love in Christ
Jim Meek
