Sunday's Message
December 10, 2017

BE READY FOR SOME SURPRISES

In the 1930s evangelicals were being run out of a town in Appalachian North Carolina.  They were having a fund raiser to help them through the turmoil.  John Niles heard a poor, mountain girl singing a song that he developed into a Christmas carol.  It goes:

I wonder as I wander out under the sky

How Jesus the savior did come for to die

For poor on’ry people like you and like I.

Jesus’ love for us always fills me with a sense of wonder.  The beauty of the world he has made for us always surprises me.  The glory of Christmas always surprises me.

This Sunday I’m preaching on “Be Ready for Some Surprises” from Luke 1:5-25.  The priest Zacharias was surprised as he was burning incense in the temple. The angel Gabriel appeared in the semidarkness and told him that his elderly wife would give birth to a son who would be forerunner for the Messiah.  Thus God would answer their prayers for a son in a surprising way!  The couple would be surprised at how God was working through them an eternal plan.

You may find yourself surprised at how God answers prayers and is working through your life an eternal plan.  Sometimes we have to wait but when we finally see what God is doing, it comes as a wonderful surprise.

So, take time this Christmas to wander through the neighborhood, looking at the moon, the stars and the Christmas lights, and dream about the surprising ways God will work out his eternal plan in your life.

We’d love for you to join my Sunday School class this Saturday at 12:30 as we leave the church for the Woodland Museum of Biblical Archaeology.  It’s free!

Don’t forget our Teachers’ Meeting Sunday at 5:30, the Church Workday Dec. 16, at 9:00 and our Business Meeting Dec. 17, at 6:00 with a dessert potluck to follow.

Finally, remember to celebrate Christ’s birth the day before Christmas!  Please bring family and friends to Sunday School at 9:00, to morning worship at 10:30 and to our Christmas Eve service at 5:00.  It will help you wonder at the most surprising birth of human history!

With love in Christ,
Dr. Jim Meek
