What's happening [February 18 - 24]

Sunday's Message
February 18, 2017

This month I’ve been preaching on “Love is the Theme.”  This Sunday I’ll preach on “Love Your Nation” from Exodus 32:7-14.  It’s about Moses on Mount Sinai.  He was on cloud nine!  All seemed well with the world.  But God could see what was going on at the base of the mountain.  His people were worshiping the golden calf saying that it was the god who had delivered them from Egypt.  God told Moses that he will destroy the people and make from Moses a great nation.  Unselfishly Moses cried out for God to save Israel.  The Lord responded to Moses’ prayer and spared the Children of Father Abraham.
During the Revolutionary War our nation’s founding father, Washington, was on the Palisades overlooking New York.  Cornwallis had just arrived with massive British troops.  But Washington was able to see God at work.  He said, “The hand of Providence has been so conspicuous in all this that he must be worse than an infidel that lacks faith and more than wicked that has not gratitude to acknowledge his obligations.”  He said that after he had fulfilled his duties as general he would turn preacher to let everyone know that it was God who had saved America.

We can love our nation as did Moses and Washington.  But like them we must pray to God and give him the glory.  The horrific events in the Florida school last Wednesday remind us of the need to pray passionately for our nation.  Come Sunday and help us do that.  Meanwhile, may you have a blessed Presidents’ Day.

With love in Christ,
Dr. Jim Meek

Restaurante Valentino was so much fun!  Thank you to Harroll, Bethia and Kris for cooking the food; thank you to Mya, Kaylyn, Mikayla, Thenujen, and Ashley for being such wonderful dessert chefs and servers; thank you for all who came out to enjoy the food and the event; and a special thank you to Jeanne, Joseph, Christian and everyone else who jumped in to help.  Events like these are what bring me joy in working for Jesus.  The immediacy of serving others and teaching others how to find joy in service is what Jesus has molded me to do.  I look forward to having more opportunities to this kind of work with our youth in the future.

We did this event as a fundraiser for our kids to go to Centrifuge Summer Camp (at Jenness) this year.  Last year, I avoided Jenness because the large price tag scared me away.  Since then every youth leader, youth parent, adult or kid who has been to Jenness seems to have come to me expressing how fantastic of an opportunity this summer camp can be.  The message was clear, I needed to get out of the way, and let God take care of the finances.  I have had much of our church family come to me with opportunities for our youth to earn their way to camp, and will be investigating them soon.  All this to say:  “If it is in Gods will, we will be going to Centrifuge Summer Camp this year!” (lifted from James 4:15)

Upcoming Lessons:

  • Sunday 2/18: Luke 8:19-21: Who is your family?
  • Wednesday 2/21: Esther:Can God use me to do his work?

Event Updates:

  • 2/17/2018: Prayer Walk and Picnic @ the Capitol, This Saturday!

Prayer Requests:

  • Courage and wisdom for me and my leadership team.  I am always afraid to take on expensive burdens for myself, my team, or our youth families.  I request that you would pray for my team to have wisdom and courage to follow God’s will with these events and to have courage when the call is clear.
  • Wisdom, love and courage.  As mentioned in the last few requests, my students are seeking wisdom in how to appropriately minister to their friends and what actions to take when they recognize dangerous behavior.  We pray for wisdom to make the right decisions, courage to act upon them, and love for God and others to be at the center of each situation.

We feel so grateful to belong to a church where people care and we so appreciate the help at this time, freeing us from meal planning and prep so we have more time to absorb all the information, and talk with all the people we need to, while still spending as much time together as we can ≈ Betty
