Sunday's Message
July 1, 2018

LET GOD FREE YOUR NATION

On July 3, 1776 John Adams made an incredible prophecy to his wife Abigail in one of their marvelous correspondences.  He predicted that the day of the signing of the Declaration of Independence would be “celebrated by succeeding generations as the great anniversary festival...with pomp and parade, with shows, games, sports, guns, bells, bonfires and illuminations from one end of this continent to the other from this time forward for evermore.”

How amazing that he would predict not only the independence of the nation but that it would grow from the Atlantic all the way to the Pacific!  He also said that it would be celebrated with “acts of devotion to God Almighty.”  Unfortunately, that part of the prophecy is not holding up very well.  Won’t you come to church this Sunday and celebrate with us the “new birth of freedom” that only God can provide?  Sunday I’m preaching from Ezekiel 37:21-28 on “Let God Free Your Nation.”  He can free us from division, from sin and from homelessness, just as he promised the Exilic Jews in Babylon.

Speaking of births of freedom!  Rhema was born to Cecilia Ningieh a week ago.  She is a precious little baby.  Let’s pray for her, her sisters and her mom and dad.

Join us at 6:00 p.m. on the 3rd of July for a decorating party for our float in the 4th of July Parade, then again at 7:00 a.m. the next morning.  We’ll leave from the church at 8:30 a.m. and march in the parade.  That night we’ll meet at 6:00 at the church for barbecue and side dishes.  Please bring meat and another dish to share.

May Adam’s prophecy continue to hold true as we have acts of devotion to God Almighty and as we help our nation be free in Christ!

With love in Christ,
Dr. Jim Meek

WE ARE CALLED TO HAVE A MISSIONARY OUTLOOK UPON OUR DAILY LIVES

“Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” Matthew 28:18-20 NIV

What exactly are we called to do? Jesus gives us two commands by which to live, The Greatest Commandment Matthew 22:36-40, and gives us the Great Commission (above) as instructions for his servants.  He spelled out for us what the master in the Parable of the Three Servants (Matthew 25:14-30) expected upon his return; that we would use the gift God has entrusted us with and multiply it.  As in the Parable of the Sower (Matthew 13:1-9) we are expected to hear the word and produce a crop a hundred, sixty, or thirty times what was sown.  How in the world are we supposed to do that?

The key is that there is no way in the world to make a Christian.  We are to be missionaries spreading the Word as the sower was to spread seed (Matthew 13:1-9); everywhere, without regard for where it lands.  We are called to:

“Fix these words of mine in your hearts and minds, tie them as a sign on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. Teach them to your children, speaking about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. Write them on the doorposts of your houses and gates, so that as long as the heavens are above the earth, your days and those of your children may be multiplied in the land the LORD swore to give your fathers.” Deuteronomy 11:18-21 NIV

We are to remember that even Paul, one of the fathers of the faith, said:

“I planted the seed in your hearts, and Apollos watered it, but it was God who made it grow.” 1 Corinthians 3:6 NLT

This both absolves us of the burden of changing hearts and minds (which is impossible for us) and places a high standard upon us as we must all always be missionaries in our daily lives. For us to spread the Word of God and grow His Kingdom it is not enough to take time out of our daily lives to be a “missionary,” we are called to have a missionary’s outlook upon our daily lives.

“Every Christian is either a missionary or an imposter” Charles Spurgeon
