Sunday's Message
June 17, 2018

HONOR GOD, PARENTS
& OTHERS

Philip II of Macedon conquered Greece.  His son pleaded with his dad to leave kingdoms for him to conquer.  That son was Alexander the Great.  Alexander’s mom wasn’t Macedonian.  Later Philip marred a Macedonian and during the wedding feast a general prayed that Philip would have a legitimate (fully Macedonian) heir.  Alexander threw a cup at the general and cried, “You villain!”  A drunken Philip rose to strike his own son but in doing so slipped and fell.  Alexander, standing over his father said, “He who plans to go from Europe to Asia cannot go from one chair to another.”  Philip ended up being poisoned to death.  His heir, Alexander, conquered the largest empire carved by one man at that time.  But he died in a drunken stupor and his kingdom was broken.  The man, like his father, had a drinking problem, and like his father failed to properly honor others.  Dishonor is like a plague that destroys societies.

This Sunday (Father’s Day) I’m preaching on “Honor God, Parents and Others” from Exodus 20:1-17.  It’s the Ten Commandments!  Almost half of them are about honoring God and the other half about honoring others.  You can’t have one without the other!  The further we move from honoring God and others the more decadent we become.  Please, help save your family, our church and our nation!  Come Sunday and learn to honor others!

Love,
Jim Meek

DEPEND ON GOD, STAY STEADFAST TO HIS COMMANDS,
AND WE WILL PROSPER

The book of Daniel contains some of my favorite stories of the bible.  I love the Fiery Furnace (Daniel 3) and the faith that is shown by Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego:

“If this is so, our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the burning fiery furnace, and he will deliver us out of your hand, O king. But if not, be it known to you, O king, that we will not serve your gods or worship the golden image that you have set up.” (Daniel 3:17-18)

I adore the Lion’s Den and Daniel’s friendship evangelism with King Darius:

“Daniel, servant of the living God, has your God, whom you serve continually, been able to rescue you from the lions?” (Daniel 6:20)

Yet I had never given much thought to the dream sequence passages found later in the book.  Daniel, chapters 7-12, focus on the dreams and visions of the prophet Daniel.  Much of the imagery from the dream sequences uses language that will later be quoted by Jesus (Daniel 7:13 to Matthew 20:28) and John in the book of Revelations.  In Daniel’s visions, we see a picture of both the first coming and the return of God’s promised Messiah.

Prophesy and parable are united in teaching us the same principle: If we attempt to stand alone, we fall into self-destruction.  Nebuchadnezzar’s dream of a statue of four metals that is destroyed shows Godless nations reduced to rubble (Daniel 2).  Daniel’s dreams of beasts, of goats and rams, are all pictures of proud nations with rich histories falling due to the debauchery of their people and their leaders (Daniel 7-8).  Nations and individuals are often interchanged as the Old Testament describes the plight of the nation of Israel as that of an unfaithful bride.  In many cases, if we see the challenges a nation is facing, we can easily insert our own name into the verse in the nation’s place and see how God is teaching us.  If we do this in Daniel, we find ourselves confronted with a call to depend on God, stay steadfast to his commands and we will prosper.

Upcoming Lessons:

  • Sunday 6/17: Luke 10:25-37: “And who is my neighbor?”
  • Wednesday 6/20: Hosea: When will the cycle of unfaithfulness come to an end?

Event Updates:

  • July 2nd-7th: Centrifuge Summer Camp
  • July 9th-13th: Game On! Vacation Bible School
  • September 15th-16th:  End of Summer Lock-In

Prayer Requests:

  • Mexico Mission Trip: We leave this Saturday!  Please pray for safe travels and safe work, that we may touch many lives and that our lives would be irrevocably changed to serve God greater.
  • Summer Camp: It’s coming up fast!
  • End of Summer Lock-In: God has placed a burden upon my heart that growth is coming.  I ask that you would pray for our faithfulness to depend on God when the challenges of growth come.

MISSION TRIP TO TIJUANA, MEXICO
JUNE 15-22 2018

This week our Missions Team is heading off to partner with Pastor Carlos of La Roca Ministries of Tijuana, Mexico. The team will spend several days helping the La Roca Missionaries work in the field to minister to the physical and spiritual needs of men, women, and children in the local area.

La Roca Ministries reaches out to touch people’s lives that are devastated by poverty, neglect, and despair. These people find themselves enslaved to drugs and alcohol and living in the streets of Tijuana, Mexico. Our desire is to mirror Christ’s compassion and concern to these people.

It has been said, “give a person a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach him how to fish and you feed him for a life.” We believed in “teaching people how to fish”. We want to see lives transformed and we believe that comes from a personal relationship with Jesus Christ.

Our program seeks to help rebuild lives by making disciples; raising up men, women, and teens as future leaders and missionaries, and sending them forth to advance the Kingdom of God on earth. Thank you for your prayers and financial support. You are making a difference today and for eternity! ≈ Pastor Carlos

& DESSERT FELLOWSHIP
JUNE 24, 2018
6:00 pm

We’ll be looking at our new Bylaws proposal.  Please pray for this process.  God has been working miraculously in our church and in people’s lives.  But there has also been a lot of suffering and mourning.  Let’s raise the banner of love and hope.  Remember, “His banner over me is love” (Song of Solomon 2:4)

ARDEN-ARCADE 4TH OF JULY PARADE
July 4, 2018
7:00 am
Meet at the church for last minute preparations

The missions and evangelism team is gearing up for this Summer's activities. Everyone is looking forward to the church's participation in the Annual Arden-Arcade 4th of July Parade. Each year, we enter a float in the parade to promote our church and Vacation Bible School to our community. It is a great opportunity for us to spotlight our church to the community in this very visible venue. We do our very best to provide a service to our community through offering family-friendly activities and a safe place for our children to thrive.

These are a few things that we need in preparation for the parade:

►4 red wagons used to hold water bottles
►Ice (needed for July 4-5)
►Paper towel tubes

If you want to help with the preparations for the parade a sign up is available in the church lobby.
