Sunday's Message
March 18, 2018

WALK TO SAVE OTHERS

Billy Graham did a revival in the Phoenix area when I was a kid.  I went with my church to visit door-to-door to invite people to the revival.  I learned that if you smile at people they’ll usually smile back.  If you invite people to an event they’ll usually be gracious.  I learned to be open to strangers.  These would be good lessons for a future of telling people about Jesus.

We need to walk with Jesus.  He came to seek and to save that which is lost.  We need to do that with him.

This Sunday I’m preaching on “Walk to Save Others” from Luke 19:1-10.  We’ll study one of the great stories of the Bible.  The vertically challenged Zaccheus ran ahead of Jesus and the crowd in order to climb a sycamore tree so he could see the Master.  When Jesus came to the tree he looked up and invited himself to the tax collector’s house.  Zaccheus wasn’t used to people looking up at him, especially someone as important as Jesus!

Out of gratitude Zaccheus vowed to give half of his wealth to the poor and to return four times what he had cheated people.  This guy had just been saved and he proved it!

Like Zaccheus we should accept Jesus’ invitation and receive him into our “house” (our lives).  Like Jesus we should seek and save that which is lost.  Be inspired and informed on how to do that this Sunday.

Meanwhile, invite people to the children’s musical March 25 at 10:30.  I’ll be preaching in that service as well.  Also, invite people to the Good Friday event March 30.  It will be a unique presentation!  Then, bring people Easter morning to Sunday School and worship.  The kids will have an Easter Egg Hunt tied into the story of resurrection.  Easter is a great time to invite people to a church where they’ll hear how to be saved for eternal, abundant life.

With love in Christ,
Dr. Jim Meek

FROM YOUR YOUTH DIRECTOR

Message from the Youth Leader:

While studying the book of Proverbs is an enlightening endeavor, committing a few proverbs to memory may prove more useful in the long run.  Proverbs is not a book of promises or law, it is the collected wisdom of those who’ve lived with and under God’s promises and law.  The proverbs are not formulas for success, but more general rules to guide someone on a path of righteousness in God’s creation.  Here are a few that speak to me:

“Trust the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.” Proverbs 3:5

“A cheerful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up bones.” Proverbs 17:22

“As iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another.” Proverbs 27:17

“He who works his land will have abundant food, but the one who chases fantasies will have his fill of poverty.” Proverbs 28:19

Jesus, as he was tempted by Satan, quoted scripture from Deuteronomy as a defense against Satan’s attacks, and “all scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness” (2 Tim 3:16) so it never hurts to have some on-hand.  I plan to commit more Proverbs to memory and challenge you to do the same.

Upcoming Lessons:

  • Sunday 3/18: Luke 9:40-56: With great power comes great responsibility…
  • Wednesday 3/21: Ecclesiastes: How does God address Nihilism?

Event Updates:

  • 2/16/2018; Tomorrow Night: Family Game Night! 5PM-9PM
  • 3/30-31/2018, “Exit” the Lock-In! 5PM-9AM

Prayer Requests:

  • Peace.  There is a lot to do to prepare for the Easter season and upcoming Summer, and I feel like a dog chasing his tail.  I ask that you please pray for my peace and discernment as I try to balance my Martha brain and my Mary heart (see Luke 38:31)
  • Resolution for the situations my students are in.  Life’s tough, and sometimes the toughness doesn’t seem to have an endpoint.  I praise God that our lessons for the last few weeks have addressed these troubles, but pray that the troubles may cease.

Greg Horton
Youth Director

WORKDAY member ministry
POSTPONDED UNTIL APRIL 28 2018
9:00 am
Raiford's Residence

Due to the rain our church workday is at Betty Raiford’s house is rescheduled, 10011 Vanguard Drive, Sacramento 95827 to Saturday, March 28, at 9:00 am. We will concentrate on clearing out their backyard, but there may be other ways we can help in the front yard and inside the house. We will carry things to the dump, but we’ll also do some yard maintenance. We need lots of help, so please join us. You can bring yard cleanup tools or just come. There will be something for everyone. Call Jim Meek at 925 784-0402 if you have questions.

We appreciate all the people who were planning on coming out Saturday!  Even if the rain stops before Saturday, our work in the grass will be more effective if conditions are dry, so please plan on coming to the Raiford home on April 28, and bring gloves and yard work equipment, or just come to help us haul things away.
