Sunday's Message
November 11, 2018

THANK GOD FOR WISDOM & ANSWERED PRAYER

On October 3, 1863 Lincoln decreed that the last Thursday of November would be a national day of thanksgiving.  Our nation was in the midst of a terrible civil war but he found reasons to give thanks.  He said we had fruitful fields and healthful skies and that they were so common that we tended to forget their source.  We had peace with foreigners even though the time would’ve been ripe for them to invade our borders.  He stated that the Union’s armies and navies were advancing, so we should gratefully acknowledge God’s grace and fervently implore that he give us harmony and union.  We need to do the same thing today.  We’ve had a divisive political campaign, but God has blessed our nation beyond all expectations.  We should thank him and pray for unity.

Sunday I’m preaching on “Thank God for Wisdom & Answered Prayer” from Daniel 2:19-28 wherein the prophet asked God to tell him what King Nebuchadnezzar’s dream was and its interpretation.  When the meaning of the dream was revealed Daniel sang a song of thanksgiving.  When the interpretation was given to the king then Nebuchadnezzar said, “Surely your God is a God of gods and Lord of lords.”

When we give thanks it has a profound impact on a nation which needs to acknowledge the source of its blessings.  This Sunday we’ll celebrate Veteran’s Day while acknowledging our custodian Raj who just obtained his citizenship.  We’ll welcome his family and we’ll have treats after church in the foyer.  Please come and celebrate with us God’s goodness to our nation and pray for the unity for which so many soldiers died.

Meanwhile, women, don’t forget the breakfast this Saturday at 8:30.  It’s a great time of sharing, eating and thanksgiving.

With love in Christ,
Dr. Jim Meek

Youth Ministry Update

MAY WE SEEK TO BECOME MORE LIKE JESUS

““All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” Matthew 28: 18-20 NIV

If the Greatest Commandments, love God and love others (Matthew 22:36-40), instruct us on how we should live, then the Great Commission (above) should instruct us on what we should be doing as we live. Jesus made it clear that we should focus on making disciples, baptizing them, and teaching all He has commanded. He reminded us of His authority in heaven and on earth and His love for us who do His work. He promised that He would be with us always. Jesus’s reminder and promise should give us courage and hope as we evangelize in our community, baptize believers into our fellowship and teach others to become disciples of Jesus.

How are we personally and corporately doing at enacting His commands? I know that in my own life I find myself seeking out temporal, earthly comfort as my default act, much more than heavenly reward. I find myself bathed in a culture that will allow me to be “happy” if I only sacrifice my waking moments to worrying about how to afford it all. I see our nation is putting increasing pressure on us to be apathetic and sedentary as we consume ever more media and produce more noise under the guise of communication. We are encouraged to be the rich young rulers to our very own kingdoms of comfort who find ourselves unwilling to hand it all over to the poor in order follow Jesus and inherit eternal life. I feel this acutely in my own life as I know that I not only bear the responsibility for my own spiritual health but also that of those who look to me as an example (see James 3:1-2).

Thanks be to God for his mercy and his sanctification process, that he gives us the Bible as a witness to His work and as an example of how He works out His promises. Throughout the New Testament, we are presented with churches suffering and stumbling in one fashion or another in such a way that an apostle felt the need to confront their sin in writing, but God used these churches anyway. The Old Testament is the grueling history of the stumbling nation of Israel that God felt the need to chastise regularly, but God used Israel anyway. Our greatest consolation, when confronted with Jesus’s commands, should be Jesus Himself, His love, His mercy, His forgiveness. When we, I, feel as though we are most apart from God is when we seek Him the most, and when He can be most glorified. May we ever seek to be more like Him.
