What's happening October 14 - 20

October is Pastor Appreciation Month

The support pastors & staff feel from their congregations have been shown as one of the most significant factors for their effectiveness and well-being.  Your support places you in partnership with them and leads to greater benefits for you ( the church) and them. Plan to do something extra special for our ministers & staff this month.

HOW CAN WE SHOW OUR LOVE AND SUPPORT
It is as simple as writing a letter, sending a card, or giving a gift of appreciation. Please include their spouse with your thoughts and gifts of appreciation.

Thank you for your love, support, and service in ministry as the body of Christ,

Debbie Fredrickson
Office Manager
El Camino Baptist Church

Sunday's Message
October 14, 2018

GIVE IT UP

In Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet the Montagues hate the Capulets.  However, Romeo, a Montague, falls in love with Juliet, a Capulet.  When she is being forced to marry Paris, her priest came up with an idea.  He gave her a drug which put her to sleep and made it look as though she had died.  After the funeral she was placed in a tomb.  Romeo got word of her supposed death and rushed into the tomb and killed himself out of grief.  She then woke up and found that he’d been poisoned.  She kissed him hoping to get poison from his lips.  Then she took his dagger and stabbed herself saying,

O happy dagger!  This is thy sheath; there rust and let me die.

We weep when we see this powerful play.  We think of the tragedy of young people giving their all for love.  However, with their death the Montagues and Capulets made peace.

Christ likewise died for love.  With his death sinful people are reconciled to a righteous God.  However, we are also commanded to give everything up for Jesus.  As we die to our selfishness out of love for Jesus then Christ can fill us and live through us in order to bring peace into a selfish world.

Sunday I’m preaching on “Give it Up” from Mark 10:17-31.  The rich, young ruler came to Jesus asking what he can do to have eternal life.  This was a common and controversial question in Jesus’ day.  Jesus let him know that there is none good but God.  So, he must quit trying to be good and simply depend on God’s grace.  However, strangely, he tells the man to sell all that he has and give the money to the poor.  Isn’t that doing something good in order to have eternal life?  The man went away sad for he had many possessions.  The truth is, we’re saved by grace through faith (Ephesians 2:8), but in order to receive that grace we must give everything to Jesus.  The giving isn’t wasted.  It will be used to help others.  Nevertheless, there is no real life until we give it all up for Jesus.  Please come Sunday and learn more.

Also, please help us with our Fall Festival coming up October 20.  Also sign up for our Christmas Musical coming December 2.  Give yourself away in service to God and others and you will profit eternally!

Love,
Dr. Jim Meek

Youth Ministry Update

OUR SPIRITUAL FRUIT WILL REAP GREAT REWARDS

“Rejoice greatly, O Daughter of Zion!  Shout, Daughter of Jerusalem!  See, your king comes to you, righteous and having salvation, gentle and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey.” (Zechariah 9:9 NIV)

Zechariah was a contemporary to Haggai, Ezra and Nehemiah and preached during the rebuilding of Jerusalem after the Babylonian exile.  God’s message through Zechariah focused upon the questions raised by his generation:  Is God going to rescue his people yet?  Is the messianic king coming?  How much longer must we wait for God to remember us?  Doesn't God love us?

Israel was acting as a child throwing a tantrum.  They had behaved poorly, forgotten their God and God had left them to depend on their own power.  God made sure that His people were not destroyed but allowed them to suffer the consequences of their choices.  He rescued them from captivity and gave them the opportunity for a fresh start.  They had received a spanking for stealing cookies and were now asking for ice cream to make up.  God is both generous and just and explains how to deal with this behavior.

God explains that Israel hadn't earned ice cream yet.  He had forgiven them for their past wrongs, but they must behave correctly before they can be blessed.  We fall into this trap ourselves when we forget that rescue is a reward.  When we are saved from the consequences of living under our own power, that is a reward.  If we then live rightly, then God will bless us according to his pleasure.  We should not expect that we would suddenly receive all the blessings associated with a righteous life without having made the choices in accordance with righteous living.  The first choice and reward God gives is the spiritual fruit of patience.  Faith in the Father and patience with His process will reap great rewards throughout our lives.

Upcoming Lessons:

  • Sunday 10/7
    • Luke 13:31-35: Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.
    • PDYM Part 1:  Live by God’s Purposes
  • Wednesday 10/10: The Book of Malachi: God will win, will we fight him or work with him?

Event Updates:

  • Ignition: December 26-30
    • Second payment due by 10/31.

Prayer Requests:

  • Student Work Scholarship: We need work to do.  Please pray that people would be moved to assist our students in raising the money for Ignition.
  • Gratitude: I am not very good at expressing gratitude beyond those in front of me.  Please pray for me that I can be more appreciative of those who help from afar.  Our ministry would not exist were it not for God’s blessing through His church.

Greg Horton
Youth Director

WOULD YOU BE WILLING TO IMPACT THE LIFE OF ONE STUDENT?

Become involved in the STUDENT WORK SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM.

This program is designed to be an opportunity for our students to earn donations toward their entry to large youth events. This is an opportunity for students to learn to manage their money properly and budget towards large goals.

How this program works:

1) Fill out a Student Work Scholarship Submission Form (online form) and turn it into the church office attention, Greg Horton, either by putting it in the offering plate on Sunday or handing it to Greg in person.

2) All submissions will be reviewed by the youth leader and put on the submission board in the youth room.

3) Students will select which jobs they are willing to take on and will work with their parents to fulfill the request.

4) Once the job is done, the student or parents will collect the agreed upon amount. Please do not write a check to the church or to the youth ministry, but rather the student who did the work.

5) If the job is not taken within the period of a month, or before the due date, for any reason, the youth leader will contact the affected party.

Thank you,

Greg Horton
Youth Director
