LEARN FROM CONTRASTING TEACHERS

When I was a student at ASU I had a variety of professors. During one semester I had Dr. Kleinfeld at 8:00. He taught Diplomatic History of Modern Europe. He had a short black mustache and straight black hair. He dressed neatly and spoke with great fervor while gesturing sharply. He reminded me of a certain German leader during World War II! After that I went to American Cultural History Class, Part 2 with Dr. Smith. He was slightly overweight with a huge, unkempt beard. His shirttail was barely tucked in and his tie was skinny with a pattern of faint silver and gold paisleys, looking as though he’d dropped over easy eggs on it. He would stand before us and casually discuss history. He reminded me of a hippie. These two men provided a great contrast. I would laugh at the contrast and learn from both of them in their unique style.

The Bible is full of contrasting teachers. The grower of sycamore figs, Amos, probably sounded different than the prince of prophets, Isaiah. I’m sure the apostle Paul sounded different from James.

Many times churches will call a pastor who is the opposite from the previous pastor, then they’ll dislike the new pastor because he’s different from the old one.

God speaks in diverse ways through diverse people. Sunday I’m preaching on “Learn from Contrasting Teachers” from Matthew 11:7-19 wherein Jesus points out that John the Baptist preached and lived one way, and the Jewish leaders didn’t accept his message. Jesus lived, sounded and looked different from John, and they didn’t accept his message either.

We must humble ourselves and learn from different kinds of preachers, teachers, books and social media outlets. We must let God direct our learning and we must be open minded enough to learn from a variety of sources, just as Moses learned in the palace of Egypt, Daniel in the court of Babylon and Paul in the schools of Tarsus. Thus God’s people have been able to impact the world for God. Please come and learn with us Sunday and help us have an impact on eternity.

Meanwhile, get ready for our Ministry Faire on September 30. I want everyone to go to Sunday School at 9:00. We have wonderful classes for various ages and situations in life. Then, attend worship at 10:30. After worship we’ll have our potluck in the Fellowship Hall. During and after the meal we can interact with the various Ministry Faire booths which will line the interior of the worship center. If you are setting up a booth please do so on Saturday, September 29. We’ll supply the table. Please register with me beforehand at 925-784-0402. And invite everyone to church so we might learn together!

Love,
Jim Meek

YOUTH MINISTRY UPDATE
September 23, 2018

WE MUST LIVE BY FAITH

Habakkuk, much like Job or Ecclesiastes, is a book wherein the speaker challenges God. This is best expressed in its opening lines:

How long, Lord, must I call for help, but you do not listen? Or cry out to you, “Violence!” but you do not save? Why do you make me look at injustice? Why do you tolerate wrongdoing? Habakkuk 1:2-3 NIV

Habakkuk is lamenting the state of the nation of Judah. Its people drive each other to slavery, the rich get richer while the poor get poorer, drunkenness abounds, and idolatry runs rampant. How could God allow such a nation to exist? God responds by explaining how He intends to use the nation of Babylon to remove Judah. Habakkuk is incensed that God would use an evil nation to punish the evil of His nation. God responds by pointing out that because of human evil, suffering and death will continue to exist until God brings it all to an end. God tells Habakkuk that through all the evil there will be remnant who will live by faith whom God is trying to rescue. He calls on Habakkuk to have faith that God will bring ultimate justice and reward.

We are a modern-day Habakkuk when we look at our nation, our poor, our world and ask “God why is everything so terrible? How could you let this happen?” God allows those who do not seek after Him to be left alone to the evil they would prefer to dwell in. In a world without God, pain, suffering, injustice, and evil abound, and some people would rather have that world than a world with God. Because God allows humans this choice to love him, there will be evil until Jesus returns for the final judgement. When Jesus returns he will wipe every tear from our eyes and separate good from evil, sheep from goat, and bring an end to human evil. Until that day we must live by faith that God will act. As a modern-day Habakkuk, we must conclude:

The Sovereign Lord is my strength; he makes my feet like the feet of a deer, he enables me to tread on the heights. Habakkuk 3:19

WOULD YOU BE WILLING TO IMPACT THE LIFE OF ONE STUDENT?

Become involved in the STUDENT WORK SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM.

This program is designed to be an opportunity for our students to earn donations toward their entry to large youth events. This is an opportunity for students to learn to manage their money properly and budget towards large goals.

How this program works:

1) Fill out a Student Work Scholarship Submission Form (online form) and turn it into the church office attention, Greg Horton, either by putting it in the offering plate on Sunday or handing it to Greg in person.

2) All submissions will be reviewed by the youth leader and put on the submission board in the youth room.

3) Students will select which jobs they are willing to take on and will work with their parents to fulfill the request.

4) Once the job is done, the student or parents will collect the agreed upon amount. Please do not write a check to the church or to the youth ministry, but rather the student who did the work.

5) If the job is not taken within the period of a month, or before the due date, for any reason, the youth leader will contact the affected party.

Thank you,

Greg Horton
Youth Director
