Sunday's Message
September 2, 2018

EVERYONE HEAR & LEARN FOR A GREAT FUTURE

Saint Augustine (354-430 AD) is sometimes called the most brilliant Christian who ever lived. He wrote the world’s first major autobiography, Confessions. He is hailed as a theological hero by Catholics and Protestants. He had an intense classical education. One day while struggling with sin in his life he heard a child sing from a neighboring courtyard, “Take up and read! Take up and read!” So, he took up Paul’s letter to the Romans and read, “Let us behave properly as in the day, not in carousing and drunkenness, not in sexual promiscuity and sensuality, not in strife and jealousy, but put on the Lord Jesus Christ and make no provision for the flesh in regard to its lusts” (Romans 13:13-14). He knew that God was calling him into the arms of Christ. He became born again and he eventually changed the world. Like Daniel and Paul, one of the reasons he made such a profound impact was his excellent education.

Sunday I’m preaching on “Everyone Hear and Learn for a Great Future” from Deuteronomy 31:7-13. On the plains of Moab Moses told Joshua before all Israel that he should be strong in the Lord and that success comes from learning and following God’s word. As kids are back in school they need to be encouraged to take learning seriously. Adults also must continue to learn. This will help them succeed in life, in their witness and their walk with God. Please come Sunday and learn with us. Sunday School is for all ages at 9:00, and worship at 10:30. My sermons are designed to help us learn about Scripture, history, literature, art, science and God’s will. It’s exciting to learn!

Usually our Men’s Breakfast is on the first Saturday of the month, but it was decided not have it on Labor Day weekend. On September 8, is the Women’s Breakfast at 8:30, so our Men’s Breakfast will be on September 15, at 7:00. Please come to the appropriate event!

With love in Christ,

Dr. Jim Meek

YOUTH MINISTRY UPDATE

Jonah: What Would You Do?

Most of us have be taught about the Book of Jonah.  God’s prophet Jonah chooses to run away from his calling, ends up spat up by a fish and performs his task anyway.  This is the summary as I understood it with the moral being not to run from God’s calling.  Our video study last night provided some key insights that make the Book of Jonah much more challenging.

First, did you know that Jonah shows up in the bible before his book?  In 2 Kings 14:23-25 we see Jonah prophesying to Israel’s King Jeroboam II about having God’s favor in battle; meanwhile, Amos, a faithful prophet of God, prophesied that Jeroboam’s wickedness would cause Israel’s destruction.  Was Jonah just preaching what the king wanted to hear; because we know Amos was right.

Second, did you know that Nineveh, the city to which Jonah was called to preach, was a major city in the Assyrian Empire?  With this tidbit, suddenly Jonah’s anger at the Ninevites becomes less absurd.  Jonah’s main complaint with God’s calling of him to Nineveh was that he didn’t want God to forgive the Ninevites.  Assyrians had murdered Israelite men, women and children, they had raped Israel and her people in an ongoing war, and Jonah wanted to see them burn.

Can you imagine being told by God to go preach to the men who committed 9/11, and that if you did, they would be welcomed into heaven?  Would you run to follow God’s command, or would you run the other way demanding that God punish them for their actions.  God loves us, God commands us to love our enemies, and God loves our enemies.  Throughout his book, Jonah asked God to kill him before he could preach, and his enemies would be forgiven.  What would you do?

Upcoming Lessons:

  • Sunday 9/2: Luke 12:49-53: Division?  Isn’t Jesus the “peace and love” guy?
  • Wednesday 9/5: The Book of Micah: God’s love is greater that human evil.

Event Updates:

  • September 8th: Lasertag Fellowship
  • September 15th-16th:  End of Summer Lock-In

Prayer Requests:

  • End of Summer Lock-In: I feel incredibly inadequate for the plans God has placed in my lap to accomplish.  Please pray that I could have greater trust and dependence upon God as I seek to do the works put before me.

Youth Director

WOULD YOU BE WILLING TO IMPACT THE LIFE OF ONE STUDENT?
Become  involved in the STUDENT WORK SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM.

This program is designed to be an opportunity for our students to earn donations toward their entry to large youth events.  This is an opportunity for students to learn to manage their money properly and budget towards large goals.

How this program works:

1) Fill out a Student Work Scholarship Submission Form (online form) and turn it into the church office attention, Greg Horton, either by putting it in the offering plate on Sunday or handing it to Greg in person.

2) All submissions will be reviewed by the youth leader and put on the submission board in the youth room.

3) Students will select which jobs they are willing to take on and will work with their parents to fulfill the request.

4) Once the job is done, the student or parents will collect the agreed upon amount.  Please do not write a check to the church or to the youth ministry, but rather the student who did the work.

5) If the job is not taken within the period of a month, or before the due date, for any reason, the youth leader will contact the affected party.

Thank you,

Greg Horton
Youth Director

5TH SUNDAY POTLUCK
& MINISTRY FAIRE
September 30
12:00 pm

Dear Friend,

Please call the church office or text me at 925 784-0402 by September 23, if you would like a booth.

You’ll need to set up no later than Saturday, September 29. You’ll also have to have at least one person manning your booth after the worship service.

This should be fun and it should help our people know what we have to offer, what our church is doing and where people can make a difference.

Let's pray for a great Ministry Faire and a church that pleases our Lord.

With love in Christ
Jim Meek
