May 22, 2022

Walter de la Mare wrote a poem about Napoleon, the French Emperor who led his army of half a million into Russia only to see half of them die in six weeks from freezing conditions.  His grand army was forced to return to Paris empty handed because the Russians kept burning towns and crops ahead of the army to starve it into retreating.  Lives were destroyed through Napoleon’s ego.  The poem “Napoleon” reads:

What is this world, O soldiers?

It is I.

I, this incessant snow,

This northern sky;

Soldiers, this solitude

Through which we go

Is I.

This poem captures the loneliness of pride.  To Napoleon, everything was about him.  This leads to self- destruction, but also to the destruction of others.  What we need to do is think about others.

Sunday I’m preaching on “Remember Others” from Matthew 7:1-14.  I love to preach from the Sermon on the Mount.  It makes me feel like a sports announcer who’s able to cover the best athletes in the world during their best game.  We’ll talk about “Don’t Judge Others,” verses 1-6; “Pray for Others,” verses 7-12; and “Enter Heaven with Others,” verses 13-14.  Please come Sunday and help us turn our eyes upon Jesus and others!

This Friday night is Parents’ Night Out.  Our youth will help watch kids, then the youth will stay overnight.  Sunday they’ll help lead in our worship service.  It’s going to be awesome!  Please participate.  It will help you remember others!

What we do and who we are

The Children’s Receiving Home of Sacramento provides a spectrum of services for youth in crisis across the Sacramento region. Founded in 1944 through a cooperative effort of the Junior League of Sacramento and the Rotary Club of Sacramento, CRH has risen to meet the specific needs of each child in need of our care for 76 years. Previously at two other locations, the Children’s Receiving Home has been located at its current site since 1965, on six acres of land deeded to the agency by the City of Sacramento.

The continuum of care we offer includes an on-site preschool for the youngest survivors of family trauma; outpatient mental health care for children residing in the community dealing with anxiety and depression; and residential treatment for children who have suffered abuse, neglect or other trauma.
