O, GIVE THANKS

November 7, 2021

In the Sacramento Bee there was an article whose headline read: “A feminist witch shares worship of the Goddess.”  That’s exactly how it was capitalized.  Other than “A,” only “Goddess” was capitalized.  The article was about Zsuzsanna Budapest, who founded Dianic Wicca in L.A. in the ‘70s.  She also founded the Goddess Festival which is still celebrated in the redwoods of California every other year.  She’s now peddling a T.V. show which she wrote about a witch who needs to pass on her powers to a new generation, and thus discovers some jailed granny peace activists from Berkeley.  And who is this Goddess to be worshipped?  She is supposedly the epitome of all goddesses throughout time.  She reigns supreme!  It essentially is the worship of the female principle in the universe.

Instead of giving thanks to a feminist goddess who epitomizes all goddesses of all myths, we get to thank the Creator God who sent his Son to crucify our sinful nature and was raised to give us the Spirit of eternal, abundant life.  The actions of this God are not part of a vague mythological past, but anchored in real time with real people.

Sunday I’m preaching on “O, Give Thanks!” from Psalm 95.  We’ll learn to “Sing to God,” verses 1-2; “Realize God’s Greatness,” verses 3-5; and “Have a Heart for Worship,” verses 6-11.  Becoming a creature of thanksgiving can change your life forever!

This Saturday night move your clocks back one hour.  This will give you an extra hour to get ready for Sunday School at 9:00.  At noon we’ll have a free meal and attend our Live Nativity Rally where we can learn how to help our church spread the reason for the Christmas season.

This Saturday morning at 8:00, if you’re male, please attend our men’s breakfast.  I’ll give a devotion on “Follow Where Pilgrims’ Feet Have Trod.”  We’ll have prayer, fellowship and a great breakfast!

Love,

Jim Meek
