Honestly Give It Up 10.21.18

Sunday's Message
October 21, 2018

I’ve heard Christians say, “Why can’t we be like the First Century Church?”  I’m wondering what Bible and history books they’re reading.  Yes, the First Century Church grew like wildfire.  But it also had its problems.  There was prejudice, jealously, stubbornness, legalism, neglect, false beliefs and a critical spirit.  The book of Acts and the letters of the apostles reveal some deep seated problems.

I’ve also heard people say, “The church is worse than the world!”  Are you kidding me?  Have you ever been to a Little League Baseball game?  Last Sunday I defended an elderly lady who was being yelled at by a man in a restaurant parking lot.  She kept apologizing to him for almost running into his car but he kept yelling at her.  I challenged him to stop yelling at the lady, so he started yelling at me while the lady escaped.  He challenged me to a fight but I simply told him that we need to be civil.

The world has its problems and the church has its problems.  But I’m not leaving either one till the Lord calls me home.

Sunday I’m preaching on “Honestly Give It Up” from Acts 4:32-5:11 about Ananias and Sapphira lying to the Holy Spirit.  Everyone else in the church in Jerusalem had given up everything for Jesus.  Each person sold all that he had and laid the money at the disciples’ feet.  So, Ananias and Sapphira lied about selling all their possessions and bringing all the proceeds to the church.  When confronted with their lies both of them fell dead.  Dread spread over the church and community.  Everyone got the message:  Honestly give everything to Jesus.  Hold nothing back.  It’s the only way to have joy, peace and eternal effectiveness.

Let’s not lie to each other, and let’s especially not lie to the Holy Spirit.  When you receive Jesus as Lord and Savior you’re saying

All to Jesus I surrender, all to him I freely give.

I will ever love and trust him, in his presence daily live.

As we give everything to Jesus (money, material goods, family, relationships, hopes, dreams, sins, worry, anger, irritation, past, present and future), Jesus leads us and works through us.  We feel light on our feet, our heart feels carefree and we impact eternity.  Join us Sunday and learn with us how to honestly give it all to Jesus.

Meanwhile, don’t forget to invite people to our Fall Festival this Saturday.  You can also help us set up on Friday and break everything down on Saturday at 3:00.
