Let Us be Accountable To Our God and Love for Him and Each Other

The Book of Amos is very reminiscent of what we would later hear from Jesus:

“For I know how many are your offenses and how great your sins. There are those who oppress the innocent and take bribes and deprive the poor of justice in the courts. Therefore the prudent keep quiet in such times, for the times are evil. Seek good, not evil, that you may live. Then the Lord God Almighty will be with you, just as you say he is. Hate evil, love good; maintain justice in the courts. Perhaps the Lord God Almighty will have mercy on the remnant of Joseph.” Amos 5:12-15 NIV

“There is nothing concealed that will not be disclosed, or hidden that will not be made known. What you have said in the dark will be heard in the daylight, and what you have whispered in the ear in the inner rooms will be proclaimed from the roofs.” Luke 12:2-3 NIV

In each passage God speaks to confront the hypocrisy of His people. God is not impressed by a show of faith, nor work done for him, nor any amount of success or wealth. Moses was given the Ten Commandments to explain what God expects, but when His people didn’t seem to get the message, Jesus summarized the ten down to two:

“‘Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’ The second is this: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no commandment greater than these.” Mark 12:29-31

If we are hoping to earn our way into heaven, we are doing it wrong. If we are seeking glory for the good works God has called us to, we are doing it wrong. If we seek pleasure, comfort or entertainment over justice, righteousness or love, we are doing it wrong. These are all examples of hypocrisy we so readily fall into, me included, but God expects more from us. From Genesis to Revelation, Moses to Amos to Jesus, Layperson to Pastor, God gives us plenty of opportunities to confront our own hypocrisy. As iron sharpens iron, let us encourage each other to be accountable to our God and love Him and each other as we have been called.

  • End of Summer Lock-In: I feel incredibly inadequate for the plans God has placed in my lap to accomplish. Please pray that I could have greater trust and dependence upon God as I seek to do the works put before me.
