The Second Virginia Revolutionary Convention met in the Old Church in Richmond, Virginia in March, 1775, because the Royal Governor had suspended the House due to its revolutionary leanings.  Patrick Henry stood to make his speech to a crowd which included George Washington, Thomas Jefferson and Richard Henry Lee who would eventually move for independence at the Continental Congress in Philadelphia.  Patrick Henry addressed the controversial issue of whether Virginia should establish a colonial militia to fight for freedom from British domination.  He said:

Is life so dear or peace so sweet as to be purchased at the price of chains and slavery?  Forbid it Almighty God!  I know not what course others may take, but as for me give me liberty or give me death.

This Sunday I’ll preach the last message in my sermon series, “Be Free.”  I’ll preach on “Walk into Freedom” from Exodus 12:33-41.  Freedom is so precious because people are created with the ability to choose.  Being denied that ability is to be less than human.

Satan robs us of freedom by making us slaves to self, sin, inadequacy and legalism.  God wants to free us.  In the Exodus passage God wanted Israel to enter freedom abundantly as the Egyptians gave the freed slaves their gold, silver and clothing.  He also wanted them to bring non-Israelites with them into freedom.  Finally, he wanted them to leave the life of bondage behind.  Too many of us live pathetic lives.  Thus we don’t invite others to join us and we keep longing to live like the world.  Let’s let God give us a beautiful life, a liberated life, where we can choose to be like Christ.  Then we can soar like eagles!
