Love Faithfully

There was a wonderful family in a church where I was once the pastor.  The teenage daughter died of cancer.  It was a great tragedy, even though we all knew that she went straight to heaven.  It’s the sort of incident from which few families recover.  The family got involved in community service and the church.  Their love seemed unassailable.  Nevertheless, in time the marriage ended in divorce.  This means that one tragedy followed another.  This case should remind us of the need to work diligently to keep love going in our families, church, community and nation.

Sunday I’m preaching on “Love Faithfully” from 2 Samuel 12:15-24.  We seed that David committed adultery and murder.  He repented so God spared his life but great suffering ensued.  The child born of the adulterous relationship died.  While the child was sick David fasted and prayed, but once the child passed David got up, washed and ate.  His servants asked why and he replied,

While the child lived I said, “Who knows but what Yahveh may be gracious?”

But now that he’s dead I know that I’ll go to him.

This is one of the few firm statements of life beyond the grave in the Old Testament.  It assures us that David’s love for his child would extend beyond death.  But also, we see David loving Bathsheba, and giving them another son.  They named him Solomon.  God loved him and used him in a special way.  Thus we see the need to love in tragic times but also to love with an eye for the future.God

Please join us Sunday as we continue to love through the power of the Holy Spirit.

With love in Christ,
Dr. Jim Meek

Be A Witness for Christ

The End is nigh.  Jesus is coming back, the seven-sealed scroll, trumpeting angels, and bowls of wrath in tow.  Jesus made it clear that the expected conquering ruler was coming, and that Jesus had come to make sure that as many as possible were with Him on that day.  If Jesus had come the first time to bring final judgment instead of salvation, I’m not confident that there would be many in heaven today.  Since Jesus came with salvation first, we can all have a much greater opportunity to join Him.  Jesus spends so much time talking about His second coming to encourage us to think of every moment as time that we have left.  We should be always counting down to the day He comes in His glory, even as we do not know the date.

“Just as it was in the days of Noah, so also will it be in the days of the Son of Man.  People were eating, drinking, marrying and being given in marriage up to the day Noah entered the ark. Then the flood came and destroyed them all.

“It was the same in the days of Lot. People were eating and drinking, buying and selling, planting and building.  But the day Lot left Sodom, fire and sulfur rained down from heaven and destroyed them all.”  Luke 17:26-29 NIV

We do not get to know when Jesus will be coming back.  Jesus likens the event to lightening flashing across the sky, or a thief in the night.  We are not meant to know, and Jesus gave up the knowledge while on earth to prevent Himself from letting the secret slip.  As a child misbehaves until the last moment if a spanking has been threatened, so too would we continue to sin until the second leading up to His coming.  God does not want lip service, He does not seek false confessions, and He is not fooled by last minute lies.  God seeks true belief, and honors true confessions, regardless of when in a person’s life they may have had such a change.  True repentance is impossible to fake and leads to change in action, but, as the thief on the cross would be with Jesus in heaven, so too can we have a true change of heart on our deathbed.  The point of all this is that we would live rightly, daily.  We should always be ready for His return and live every moment as though our eternity would be judged by it.  If we wish to see our friends, family, neighbors, acquaintances, or even strangers in heaven, we need to treat every moment with them as an opportunity to be a witness for Christ, for each moment could be our last chance to reach them.

  • Wisdom: There is a great wave of interest in finding safe places for teenagers to hang out… God may be nudging us to ride this wave, but we will need God’s wisdom not to wipe out or chicken out.
