Anticipate Payback for Suffering

In Shakespeare’s Hamlet, Prince of Denmark, the son of the king had returned from school in Wittenberg, Germany to find that his father had died and that his uncle Claudius had married his mother and taken over the throne. As if that wasn’t enough cause for grief, the ghost of Hamlet’s father appeared and told Hamlet that he was killed by Claudius. No wonder the prince cried out, “Something is rotten in the state of Denmark!” The ghost demanded that Hamlet avenge the murder. Hamlet does so, but by the end of the play the stage is filled with corpses. Hamlet is dying in the arms of his friend Horatio who says, “Good night, sweet prince. May flights of angels sing thee to thy rest!” We thus hope that God will pay Hamlet back for all that he has suffered.

Sunday I’m preaching on “Anticipate Payback for Suffering” from Luke 22:14-24. We may feel that something is rotten in our country, our community, our family and maybe even the church! Our health may be failing and our money may be gone. If that’s the case, then we must anticipate that God will pay us back a million times over for every grief we’ve ever suffered.

We’ll have the Lord’s Supper this Sunday, and the sermon will be about that meal in which Jesus anticipated his suffering, but also anticipated the glory that will follow. Those who follow Jesus will also experience glory as a follow-up on suffering (Romans 8:18). Please join us this Sunday and let God encourage you that he is graciously paying you back eternally.

By the way, thanks to all who participated in the Spring Celebration last Sunday. God gave us a beautiful day!

Let’s pray for another beautiful day this Saturday as we have our Men’s Breakfast at 7:00. Afterward, at 8:30, we’re having a workday for everyone. The workdays are great fun and we accomplish a lot! Whether you’re skilled or not, young or old, there’s something to do.

In December we’re having a Live Walk Thru Nativity in which people from the community can see various scenes on our campus with live actors and animals and with beautiful sets. We’re getting the sets, props and costumes from my previous church in Livermore. This Saturday we’ll make room in our church for storing these things. We can really use your help for the nativity and for clearing space this Saturday.

Meanwhile, no matter what you’re going through, give thanks to God that he is in the process of paying you back gloriously in this life and in the afterlife.

With love in Christ,

Jim Meek

Prayer Requests:
The Easter Lock-In: I am a firm believer in the “go all the way, or don’t bother” plan for décor and theme, and for this lock-in, we’re going all the way. I pray for wisdom as we work that our efforts would be rewarded with teenagers excited in coming to our church.
Wisdom: There is a lot on our plates as we move to Easter, and I pray that my leadership team would be blessed with great wisdom as we choose how we invest our time.
