Sunday's Message
August 26, 2018

Saint Augustine (354-430 AD) is sometimes called the most brilliant Christian who ever lived. He wrote the world’s first major autobiography, Confessions. He is hailed as a theological hero by Catholics and Protestants. He had an intense classical education. One day while struggling with sin in his life he heard a child sing from a neighboring courtyard, “Take up and read! Take up and read!” So, he took up Paul’s letter to the Romans and read, “Let us behave properly as in the day, not in carousing and drunkenness, not in sexual promiscuity and sensuality, not in strife and jealousy, but put on the Lord Jesus Christ and make no provision for the flesh in regard to its lusts” (Romans 13:13-14). He knew that God was calling him into the arms of Christ. He became born again and he eventually changed the world. Like Daniel and Paul, one of the reasons he made such a profound impact was his excellent education.

Sunday I’m preaching on “Everyone Hear and Learn for a Great Future” from Deuteronomy 31:7-13. On the plains of Moab Moses told Joshua before all Israel that he should be strong in the Lord and that success comes from learning and following God’s word. As kids are back in school they need to be encouraged to take learning seriously. Adults also must continue to learn. This will help them succeed in life, in their witness and their walk with God. Please come Sunday and learn with us. Sunday School is for all ages at 9:00, and worship at 10:30. My sermons are designed to help us learn about Scripture, history, literature, art, science and God’s will. It’s exciting to learn!

Usually our Men’s Breakfast is on the first Saturday of the month, but it was decided not have it on Labor Day weekend. On September 8, is the Women’s Breakfast at 8:30, so our Men’s Breakfast will be on September 15, at 7:00. Please come to the appropriate event!

August 26, 2018

We should always seek to love our neighbor as ourselves, always seek to be reconciled with our family, and always be willing to show Jesus’ sacrificial love to the world around us.  Any other response is the result of our pride.

Twenty-one verses.  The Book of Obadiah may be short, but it packs a punch.  Obadiah opens with a stinging rebuke for the nation of Edom.  During Babylon’s conquering of Judah, not only did Edom ignore the cries for help, but it also looted and attacked what was left.  This injustice would not go unnoticed by God, and Obadiah prophesies Edom’s fall from pride along with all other proud nations before the Lord.

Why the nation of Edom?  Edom’s historical patriarch was Esau, and Esau’s family never forgot the injustice inflicted upon them by Israel’s patriarch Jacob.  From the story in Genesis, when Jacob tricked Esau for the birthright and Isaac for the blessing.  Esau was driven to murderous rage that wouldn’t leave him even as he moved on with his life.  Jacob made sure his family kept its distance from the family of Esau.  Many years later their families would meet again as Moses lead the Israelites out of the wilderness toward the promised land.  The Israelites could have passed through the “lands of their brother”, Edom, but were met with threats and an army.  Instead of honoring their shared history, these nations stood apart as betrayed allies.  What a shame.

We should always seek to love our neighbor as ourselves, always seek to be reconciled with our family, and always be willing to show Jesus’ sacrificial love to the world around us.  Any other response is the result of our pride.  Sometimes we are waiting for them to apologize first, other times, they are just too “sinful” to be forgiven or they hurt us in an “unforgivable” way.  Not all these instances feel like pride, nor are entirely unjustified, but Jesus set the bar high for what is truly “unforgivable” when he forgave the people who nailed him to the cross.  The Book of Obadiah is a warning against such pride and judgement that comes with it.  Twenty-one verses.  Give it a read sometime, you’ll enjoy it.

Upcoming Lessons:

  • Sunday 8/26: Luke 12:36-48: Be ready for anything.
  • Wednesday 8/29: The Book of Jonah: Curse you Nineveh!

Event Updates:

  • August 29th: Fifth Wednesday, Youth Serves Dinner Fundraiser
  • September 8th: Lasertag Fellowship
  • September 15th-16th:  End of Summer Lock-In

Prayer Requests:

  • School: School started Thursday for most of our kids.  Please pray for them as they go into the mission field.  We pray that they would be the influencers, not the influenced.
  • End of Summer Lock-In: I feel incredibly inadequate for the plans God has placed in my lap to accomplish.  Please pray that I could have greater trust and dependence upon God as I seek to do the works put before me.

Dear Friend,

If you're a ministry leader, committee member or teacher at El Camino Baptist Church we'd like you to participate in our Ministry Faire on September 30, during our 5th Sunday potluck.

We will have tables set up around the inside of the worship center on which you can let the church know about your ministry.  Your booth can simply have information about your ministry or class, or it can also ask for volunteers. You can have sign-up sheets, pamphlets and/or a suggestion box. We can help you with ideas and materials if you'd like.

Please call the church office or text me at 925 784-0402 by September 23, if you would like a booth.

You can be creative in order to help your ministry look exciting (balloons, posters, tablecloths, videos, music and/or figurines). You’ll need to set up no later than Saturday, September 29. You’ll also have to have at least one person manning your booth after the worship service.

This should be fun and it should help our people know what we have to offer, what our church is doing and where people can make a difference.

Let's pray for a great Ministry Faire and a church that pleases our Lord.

With love in Christ
Jim Meek
