Sunday's Message, December 11, 2016
"Be Joyful"

This Sunday we light the advent candle of joy.  I'll be preaching on, "Be Joyful!" from Luke 2:1-20.

"Advent" comes from the Latin word which means "to come."  Note that the word "adventure" implies exciting things yet to come. Advent is a celebration of the fact that Jesus came to earth to bring us an eternal adventure.  But we should also see it as a celebration of the fact that he's coming again.  This is reflected in the song:

Joy to the world!  The Lord is come.
Let earth receive her king.

Let every heart prepare him room,
and heaven and nature sing.

This speaks of the joy that Christ brings now when he comes into our hearts, and the peace he'll bring to the whole planet when he comes again.

Can a person be commanded to be joyful?  Isn't joy an emotion that comes on us unexpectedly and leaves at inopportune times?

Yes and no.  It can be seen as a fickle emotion, but it is also something that we can acquire with practice through the leadership and power of the Holy Spirit.  Otherwise, it wouldn't be demanded of us in such verses as Philippians 4:4, "Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice!"

Please come to worship on Sunday at 10:30 and learn how to rejoice always.  Also, come to Sunday School at 9:00.  Studying God's word as a church family brings joy!  Then, Sunday night at 6:00 we'll have a Business Meeting with desserts that you'll bring, so that we can have fun as Christ's body.

Whenever you're feeling depressed, remember the words to the shepherds, "I bring you good news of great joy which shall be to all people; for today in the city of David there has been for you a Savior who is Christ the Lord."  I can't help but be happy when I hear those words!  This Christmas focus on those words, and spread the good news that there is joy in Jesus.

Church Business Meeting

Sunday, December 11
6:00 pm

You Do Not Want to Miss This! Come for an evening of celebration as we conduct business for our Lord in preparation for the new year. Our desire is to honor God in our plans and since we are the Body of Christ, each and every one of us is important to the work and ministry of our church. Your participation counts, so make plans to attend.

After our business session we will have a time of fellowship. Come with your favorite holiday dessert to share.

So if there is any encouragement in Christ, any comfort from love, any participation in the Spirit, any affection and sympathy, complete my joy by being of the same mind, having the same love, being in full accord and of one mind. Philippians 2:1-2

Make my joy complete and join us
Sunday, December 11th.
