RECEIVE THE GRACE OF LIGHT BECOME FLESH

John Newton was the captain of a slave ship.  Those vessels would carry hundreds of Africans across the Atlantic with no regard for human life.  But after reading The Imitation of Christ by Thomas a Kempis and after almost dying in a storm Newton gave his life to Christ.  He later became a pastor and led William Wilberforce to eradicate the slave trade in the British Empire.  Newton also wrote the most popular hymn of all time:

Amazing grace, how sweet the sound
That saved a wretch like me!

I once was lost but now am found,
Was blind but now I see.

We need to let Jesus cure our blindness.  We’re walking in the darkness of sin, bitterness, frustration and worry.  Jesus came to give us grace so we can walk in the light of love, joy and peace.  Jesus is light who became flesh so he could crucify our darkness and be raised to inhabit us so that he could be flesh through us.  When we receive him and depend on him then we become light (Matthew 5:14).

Sunday I’m preaching on “Receive the Grace of Light Become Flesh” from John 1:1-17.  The Apostle John gives us an eagle eye view of Christ and why he became flesh.  Christ’s becoming flesh is called the incarnation.  Let’s take that incarnation and let Christ live and love through us.  Then he can use us to bring peace on earth including peace in our homes, churches, workplaces, schools and neighborhoods.

Please come to our Christmas Eve Candlelight Service at 5:00.  I’ll portray a shepherd in a dramatic monologue with beard and costume.  We’ll sing Christmas songs and get ready for a night of mystical light.

With love in Christ,
Dr. Jim Meek

Youth Ministry Update

Let us celebrate Christ’s birth with excitement and joy!

Studying the characters of the traditional nativity we come across some interesting archetypes.  There are the angels who’ve been watching God’s plan from the beginning of time, waiting for this moment to come.  Shepherds who were simply minding their own business when they were informed of the good news that would bring great joy.  Wise men who had spent considerable time putting the clues together that lead them to this occasion.  Joseph who had had what should have been a great moment of his life be clouded by doubt and pain.  Mary a child both in awe of the child God has blessed her with and aware of the societal pressure placed upon her and her family that this blessing has wrought.  Animals, there to witness, neither involved nor affected by the events that transpired.  When presented with an event as momentous as the birth of the savior of humanity, our relation and reaction to the event speaks volumes about our own spiritual condition.

We are presented with the opportunity to witness this birth every time someone accepts Christ into their life.  A new little Christ-follower has been born into the world, harboring a faith that could be stamped out, choked or burned up if not cared for and tended with love.  We as believers should probably find ourselves as angels or wise men, celebrating God’s work as one who’s been expecting it to happen for a long time.  Some of us may find ourselves to be as Mary, having helped to bring this new Christian into the world and worried and excited for what the future holds for them.  Others may find themselves as Joseph, wondering what has happened to the one they’ve loved, sure that there has been an important change, but not changed themselves yet.  We should be worried if we feel most akin to the animals, simply waiting for all the fuss to be over so we can get back to our normal lives.  Christmas is the celebration of Christ’s first coming into the earth, but every new believer invites him to return and live with and through them.  Let us celebrate Christ’s birth with excitement and joy every opportunity we have to see Him!

“I tell you that in the same way there will be more rejoicing in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who do not need to repent.” Luke 15:7 NIV

Upcoming Lessons:

  • Sunday 12/23: Gift Exchange!
  • Wednesday 12/26: No Wednesday Night Activities

Event Updates:

  • Ignition: December 26-30 NEXT WEEK!!!
  • January Parent Appreciation Dinner, Sunday, 1/20/19, 5pm

Prayer Requests:

  • Planning!: We are looking toward 2019 as a year to grow!  For that to happen we must prepare our fields to the wave of growth that God will bring.  If God provides the rain, but seed isn’t in the ground, will any growth occur?
  • Gratitude: I am not very good at expressing gratitude beyond those in front of me.  Please pray for me that I can be more appreciative of those who help from afar.  Our ministry would not exist were it not for God’s blessing through His church.

Youth Director
