Give from a Grateful Heart

(from Followers of the Way - A Practice in Discipleship by Debbie Fredrickson)
As a follower of Jesus I devote my life to Generosity
During the Christmas season we think a lot about the giving of gifts. We are inundated by the media with anything an everything we may want to put on our Christmas list and we give. Have you ever wondered why do we Give?

Why Do We Give?

Because We are His Beloved Children
God has bestowed His great love upon us and has given us the privilege to be called is children.
"See what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God; and so we are" (1 John 3:1). As His children we seek to please Him by becoming more and more like Jesus. As we learn more about Him and follow His example He works in us to make us all we should be. And what are we to be? "Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children. And walk in love, as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us, a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God" (Ephesians 5:1-2). As His beloved children we are to resemble Him.

Because Our Hearts Are Moved
God looks at generosity as more than an action. It is an attitude of the heart.
"Each on must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver" (2 Corinthians 9:7). Jesus praised the generosity of the poor widow who gave all she had because she gave sacrificially from a grateful heart. God wants us to give prayerfully, lovingly, purposefully and willfully out of love and appreciation of God's grace and provision, realizing that everything we have belongs to Him and has been given to us to manage for His good purpose.

Because It Brings Glory To God
Our gifts of generosity which come from gratitude to God is a sweet smelling sacrifice to Him and brings glory and honor to His name.
"Yes, you will be enriched in every way so that you can always be generous. And when we take your gifts to those who need them, they will thank God" (2 Corinthians 9:11). God's love for us will never change. Our relationship with Him is not dependent on what we do or what we can offer Him. His love stands on nothing else but His unfailing affection and devotion to us. He delights in our unselfish behavior and it pleases Him when we give our best and give with the right motives. It pleases Him because He created us to be generous and when we are generous we resemble Him as His beloved children.

Because I Put My Trust In God and Partner with Him for a Greater Purpose
Jesus saw the crowds of people so He went to the top of the mountain and sat down. He gathered His disciples around Him and He taught.

Matthew 6:19-21
Don't store up treasures here on earth, where moths eat them and rust destroys them, and where thieves break in and steal. Store your treasures in heaven where moths and rust cannot destroy and thieves do not break in and steal. Where ever your treasure is, there the desires of your heart will also be.

Matthew 6:33 Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously and He will give you everything you need.

Jesus knows our heart better than we do. He knows what we place our heart on will eventually direct the course of our life and the choices we make. He knows that where our HEART is focused is also where our TRUST is focused. Jesus knows our trust can only remain in GOD. And as we put our TRUST IN GOD we are freed from worry and our hearts can be transformed so that we may focus on something of greater purpose and of more lasting value. That we might realize the blessings given to us by God can now reach beyond our life here on earth and be of eternal value to the Kingdom of God.

Matthew 16:16-18
Simon Peter answered. "You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God." Jesus replied, "You are blessed, Simon son of John because my Father in heaven has revealed this to you. You did not learn this from any human being...and upon this rock. I will build my church, and all the powers of hell will not conquer it."

Jesus wants our desire to be on HIM as we offer ourselves in spiritual worship to God; all that we are--our heart, our hands, our eyes our feet and all that we possess, so that we may be a blessing to others and further the Kingdom of His work.

Sunday's Message, December 25, 2016,

Take Advantage of Your Adoption

Thank you to all who presented our musical last Sunday!  It was beyond awesome!  Also, thanks to all who came.  It was good to see so many people worshiping God together.

You may be adopted or you may have adopted children.  I’ve heard it said that you don’t choose your natural children, but you get to choose the ones you’ve adopted!

If you’ve given your life to Christ, you’ve definitely been chosen (1 Peter 1:1-2)!  You’ve been given the spirit of adoption and made joint heirs with Jesus (Romans 8:15-18).

That means you’ll inherit everything Jesus will inherit!  You’ve been made a child of God and you’ll never lose that status!

We will celebrate your adoption
this Christmas morning.

Christmas is the ultimate holiday.  Don’t forget that holiday comes from the words, “holy day.”  We will thus celebrate Christ’s birth by having Sunday School or Bible Study for all ages at 9:00 and worship at 10:30.  In the kids’ Sunday School classes they’ll have a birthday party for Jesus!  During the 10:30 service I’ll preach from Galatians 4:1-7 about, “Take Advantage of Your Adoption,” where Paul says that Jesus was born in the fullness of time to save us from the fallen nature of our birth into a new birth of being God’s adopted children forever.  Wow!  The advantages that come from that never end!

Also, don’t forget to worship with us on Christmas Eve at 5:00.  It will be a candlelight service and I’ll portray Joseph in beard and costume giving a dramatic monologue entitled, “Go from Darkness to Light!”

Finally, on New Year’s Day we’ll also have Sunday School at 9:00 and worship at 10:30.  Please bring as many friends, family members and strangers as possible to these holiday (holy day) events!

Merry Christmas,
Dr. Jim Meek
