LOOK TO THE FUTURE

In the U.S. suicide is the tenth leading cause of death. In 2017 there were 47,173 suicides in America. There were 1,300,000 attempts! Hamlet famously said, “To be or not to be, that is the question.”

These people had lost hope for the future. A Christian should always have hope for the future. Sunday I’m preaching on “Look to the Future” from Hebrews 12:1-14. The writer was telling Jewish Christians to stay faithful to Christ in spite of hardship. They must keep their eyes on Jesus and endure discipline. The Lord disciplines those whom he loves so that they may grow into wonderful Christians for eternity. When we suffer we should not feel cursed by God but blessed. He only disciplines his children because only they have a glorious, meaningful future.

Our church was really blessed in 2018, but it also endured a lot of suffering through illnesses. Let’s look forward to the plans that God has for us in 2019. God’s statement through Jeremiah to suffering Judah holds true for us:

“I know the plans that I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans for welfare and not for calamity to give you a future and a hope.” – Jeremiah 29:11.

Let’s cling to that promise and look forward to 2019 and eternity! It’s going to be wonderful!

It’s a great time of devotion, food and fellowship.

By the way, ladies, you should come to the Women’s Breakfast this Saturday at 8:30.

Love,

Dr. Jim Meek

Youth Ministry Update

In the same year that Kim and I were married, Kim graduated from San Jose State University with a Bachelor’s in Interior Design.  The summer following graduation, before the wedding, Kim and I were franticly searching for how we were going to support our soon-to-be-formed family.  Within a week of our September wedding, Kim found a job in San Jose.  We were to have our wedding, enjoy our honeymoon, and return to Sacramento only to move immediately to the Bay Area.

After settling down from our whirlwind wedding, we started our hunt for a church in our neighborhood.  The defining factor for us was that our new church would be nearby such that we could serve more readily.  We were blessed to quickly encounter Hillview Baptist Church in Fremont, and immediately settled in.  The church was made up of around 30 dedicated believers who seemed as excited about us as we were to find them.  Over the next two years Kim and I would serve at Hillview in various capacities until we moved back to Sacramento to have our first child.

Kim and I would not be the people we are today were in not for this time of reinvention and self-discovery.  We were gifted the opportunity to be fresh capable faces in a loving church environment.  Surrounded by believers much more experienced than ourselves, we were able to bathe in wisdom and knowledge.  God was clearly preparing us for the life we were planning to return to in Sacramento.  During that time, we never lost connection with El Camino and considered it to be our home church.  When we moved back, there was no question as to where we would be attending.

I tell you all this, to remind you that we are all one body with Christ as our head.  Sometimes the leg falls asleep, or the finger goes numb, but if you put the limb to use, or change its environment, suddenly it can be reawakened to the joy of serving the whole.  If you feel like church is your routine and not exciting anymore, try sitting in a different seat this Sunday, try attending a different bible study for a bit, or try serving on a different committee or ministry team.  See what lessons God can teach you as you find yourself with an opportunity for reinvention.  Know that God loves those who are on fire for Him and rewards them with joy for their efforts.

Upcoming Lessons:

  • Sunday 1/13:
    • Congrats, You’re Gifted: The Intro!
    • Jesus and the Early Church: Luke 16:1-15
  • Wednesday 1/16:  What’s your SHAPE?

  • Wednesday Fundraiser, Wednesday, 1/30/19, 5:30pm

Prayer Requests:

  • Passion and Excitement: The students (and the adults) have just come off a the excitingly exhausting winter break and are headed back to the doldrums of school once again.  We pray for a passionate new year; one that would have us excited with God’s prospects, not simply waiting for the summer vacation to come.
  • Wisdom: I have a wonderful team of youth leaders working with me in this ministry, I pray that God would give me wisdom to lead them effectively.  As I am an imperfect person leading imperfect people in the ways of a perfect God, please grant me wisdom.
