MAKE THINGS RIGHT WITH GOD

When I was in seminary in Fort Worth, Texas I knew that I would go to my parents’ house in Scottsdale, Arizona for Christmas to be with them and my girlfriend, Nancie Bossert.  But for Thanksgiving I needed someplace closer, so I went to Bossier City, Louisiana to be with my aunts, uncles and nieces.  While there the pastor of my aunt’s church resigned after confessing an affair with his secretary.  The church and my family were stunned.  But Bossier City was known as “Little Las Vegas,” and the people involved in the businesses on “the strip” rejoiced that the city’s famous preacher had experienced a great fall.

When King David had an affair with Bathsheba and sent her husband to the front lines to be killed by the enemy, Satan must have rejoiced.  What a terrible witness David’s fall was to the pagan world!

But to David’s
credit he repented of his sins and wrote the beautiful Psalm 51.  I’m preaching from that song Sunday.  My sermon is entitled, “Make Things Right with God.”

In the new
year we can make things right with God.  We can seek his forgiveness and he will give it freely.  We can also seek to please him.  After all, that’s why we exist: to please God.  Won’t you join us Sunday? It will be pleasing to God.

This Saturday is our Men’s Breakfast at 7:00.  It’s always a wonderful time of prayer, devotion, fellowship and eating the best bacon west of the Mississippi.

Thank you for a great year!  Your sacrifice and
has been exemplary.  Keep it up!  It will please God.
love

With love in Christ,
Jim Meek

Youth Ministry Update

GOD IS GOOD ALL THE TIME!
ALL THE TIME GOD IS GOOD!

Last night was rough.  The first Wednesday night lesson of the new year, coming off of a couple of weeks of celebratory exhaustion, without a strong plan, I felt that the lesson was a mess.  I taught about having purpose in the new year and how we should evaluate our purpose in relation God’s calling in our lives.  I covered my lacking leadership in humor in order to salvage some semblance of composure.   I did not fool myself, nor the students.  God provided the wisdom to end the “lesson” about five minutes early and transition over to the game “Happy Salmon” to get the kids involved and laughing, and it worked.  We ended the evening exhausted and smiling (Happy Salmon involves much running and silliness).  I am not proud of the rebound, nor the need for it, but I thank God for it.

I needed to be reminded of the value of being prepared.  I have a pride in my ability to “think on my feet” and often find myself relying on that ability.  That is not dependence upon God, that is dependence upon His gifts as an excuse not to prepare.  God calls us to take Him seriously; to give Him the time that is His due and to treat Him as the God of the universe, with all the respect that entails, as well as to accept His loving embrace.  In this moment, after my failure to lead, I find myself needing and accepting His embrace.  His love for me even as I choose poorly.  His grace doesn’t erase the lesson learned by the fall, but it does ensure that the fall doesn’t serve as downward spiral.  I can lean upon His grace to pick myself up and start again.  Next week is a new lesson, one that can be worthy of His calling and be valuable to His flock.  My purpose is to prepare my students for life with God in a secular world.  God places high expectations on those who would call themselves teachers, and I pray that God will help me to prepare to meet them.

Not many of you should become teachers, my James 3:1-2, NIVbrothers, because you know that we who teach will be judged more strictly.  We all stumble in many ways. If anyone is never at fault in what he says, he is a perfect man, able to control his whole body.

Upcoming Lessons:

  • Sunday 1/6: LukeActs vs. YourGifted! The cage match of the century!  Who will you choose?
  • Wednesday 1/9:  The Friendship Evangelism Challenge!

Event Updates:

  • January Parent Appreciation Dinner, Sunday, 1/20/19, 5pm
  • Wednesday Fundraiser, Wednesday, 1/30/19, th55:30pm
  • $60 Deposit for Centrifuge Summer Camp Due 2/1/19

Prayer Requests:

  • Passion and Excitement: The students (and the adults) have just come off a the excitingly exhausting winter break and are headed back to the doldrums of school once again.  We pray for a passionate new year; one that would have us excited with God’s prospects, not simply waiting for the summer vacation to come.
  • Wisdom: I have a wonderful team of youth leaders working with me in this ministry, I pray that God would give me wisdom to lead them effectively.  As I am an imperfect person leading imperfect people in the ways of a perfect God, please grant me wisdom.
