MAKE IT ALL ABOUT GOD

In 1777 Congress appointed John Adams as commissioner to France after he’d served four years in the Continental Congress.  His wife, Abigail, and son, Johnny, had missed him and the family was losing money because John spent so much time serving the newborn nation.  Nevertheless, he always said yes when summoned by his country.  It was decided that Abigail couldn’t go with him to Paris but their ten year old son begged to go.  She agreed although the Atlantic crossing was dangerous in winter and especially dangerous during war against Britain, the greatest sea power in the world.  When Johnny got to Paris she wrote to him saying, “Remember you are accountable to your Maker for all your words and actions.”  Johnny took those words to heart.  After his dad had become second President of the U.S., he would become its sixth.  But the family remembered to put God first.  Serving their nation was one of the ways they served God.

Sunday I’m preaching on “Make It All about God” from 1 Peter 1:1-9 wherein the leader of the disciples writes about being chosen by God, blessing God and rejoicing with God.  We’re tempted to make everything about us.  That makes us selfish and miserable.  But when we make everything about God we’re free to rest in his grace and to minister to others through his power.

Please make it all about God this Sunday and come to Sunday School at 9:00 and worship at 11:00.  This Saturday is a yard sale to help fund our mission trips and Vacation Bible School for adults, youth and children.  This Sunday night at 6:00 is our semi-annual business meeting.  Everyone is invited as we make everything about God!

Love,
Jim Meek

While we were sinners, Christ died for us

““For all have sinned, and fall short of the glory of God.” Romans 3:23 NIV

“For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Romans 6:23 NIV

“But God demonstrates His love toward us, in that, while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” Romans 5:8 NIV

The “Roman Road” method of evangelism, of which the above verses are an excerpt, is a tool for leading people to Christ using verses from the Book of Romans.  The schema lays out some of the basic concepts central to Christian doctrine and a logical path toward salvation.  We have used these verses as the introduction to our last two lessons because they offer simple reminders for what we claim to believe.

Our current study is focused upon the issue of homosexuality and our response to the people who practice it.  It has been a tough lesson to prepare for, teach, and learn from, because our students are inundated with a culture that celebrates LGBT culture.  In both the Old and New Testament we can find plenty of verses that clearly define the practice of homosexuality as sin (Genesis 19, Leviticus 18:22 & 20:13, Romans 1:18-32, 1 Corinthians 6:9-10) and yet we are also commanded to love others and not to judge or we will be judged (Matthew 22:39, Matthew 7:1).

As I grew up outside the church, my memory is of signs like “God hates Gays” in lawns during the Prop 8 vote.  My unchurched, conservative upbringing may have lead me to believing that homosexuality is wrong, but what the “church” was doing seemed so much worse.  If God hates people for acting in accordance with the way they feel, how could God be good?

To come to grips with this, there are a few things we must clarify.  First, all have sinned, and in the eyes of God, all sins equally lead to death (James 2:8-13).  Lying is not less than adultery, or homosexuality greater than murder.  Different sins have different worldly consequences, but the same eternal punishment.  Second, God’s gift of eternal life extends to all whom take hold of it.  Jesus came for the sick and the weary with a message of love. His message is not one of becoming perfect before seeking salvation, but is much more the opposite, be saved and seek perfection.  He commanded us to reach those in need of salvation with the message of love so that they too could be saved.

Third and finally, though it is not in the bible verbatim “love the sinner, hate the sin” (Mahatma Ghandi) is Christ’s example for us.  We must hate sin in our own lives and the lives of those around us and what it does in our world, but we cannot hate people.  While we were still sinners Christ died for us, and with his strength all things are possible (Romans 5:8 and Philippians 4:13).  We must love our “enemies” and those who practice sin in order to reach them with the light that illuminates and eradicates all darkness.
