Sunday's Message
June 9, 2019

BE SPIRIT-FILLED

On June 9, 1944 the U.S. participated in D-Day, history’s greatest military event.  The Nazis had conquered the West European mainland and the allies were fighting for a foothold on the beaches of Normandy from which to defeat Germany.  The allies had dominated the Atlantic and cleared the skies of enemy planes.  They had bombed railways and bridges that could be used to send Nazis to the front, and had leaked false reports of where the attack was to take place.  They had even put dummy armies in certain places in Britain to fool the Nazis.  Nevertheless, when the allies came ashore there was a 90% casualty rate in the first wave!  There was an 80% casualty rate in the second wave!  Just on Omaha Beach there was a loss of almost 3,000 men in the first few hours of the attack.  The allies were facing a terrible enemy.

We face an even greater enemy today.  His name is Satan.  He is determined to destroy our planet, nation, church, family and lives.  We see his destructive power everywhere we turn.  But John wrote, “Greater is he who is in you than he who is in the world” (1 John 4:4).  Satan should actually fear us (James 4:7), but that will only happen if we’re Spirit-filled.

Sunday is Pentecost so I’m preaching on “Be Spirit-Filled” from Acts 2:1-21.  Pentecost, when the Holy Spirit was given to all believers, is one of the great days in history, like the days of Christ’s birth, death and resurrection.  So, come celebrate with us!  And let’s learn to launch attacks against Satan’s strongholds!

Don’t forget the Women’s Breakfast this Saturday at 8:30.  It’s important for the church to get together as often as possible to encourage each other and to show our love. As the disciples were in one accord in one place on Pentecost, so we help each other be Spirit-filled when we gather in his name.  Also, let’s pray for our Mexico Mission Trip members as they leave Saturday.

Together let’s claim victory in Jesus!

Love,
Jim Meek

“On my honor, I will do my best, to do my duty to God and my country and to obey the Scout Law; to help other people at all times; to keep myself physically strong, mentally awake and morally straight.” Scout Oath, Boy Scouts of America

I grew up with Boy Scouts as a major part of my life.  We met every Tuesday and recited the Scout Oath at the end of every meeting.  We were kids and memorized words that we knew we had to without much thought to the meaning of what we were saying.  Though I have not thought of it in many years, in retrospect, this Oath has had a major impact upon my life.

“Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth.” 2 Timothy 2:15 NIV

I am plenty ashamed of the effort that I give to the work that I do, and try my best to correctly handle the Word of Truth, but know that I fall short.  These statements share the phrase “do your best” for a reason.  God expects us to approach Him honestly, with effort.  He wishes for us to take the first step, to open the door, and promises that He will take over and help us through the rest.  Sitting around waiting to improve does not cause improvement, only action will.  It is depressing for me to hold events or lessons where it is clear that none of those attending are doing any more than warming their seats.  “I don’t feel like it” or “that’s dumb” or “I don’t want to” are excuses I have heard a thousand times in attempts to get out of participating.  These are each expressions of pride, discomfort, laziness, or boredom that are meant to disarm any call to action.  Yet, if I were to ask any who have come if they wish to have fun or to learn, they would often say that they would.  Why then is it so hard to “do your best”?

If we want to grow we must participate in life.  If we want our children to grow, we must model growth ourselves, and challenge our children to grow as well.  To passively go through life avoiding any struggle is to wait for death in the most boring way possible.  We must overcome Satan’s tempting to sit on the couch in front of the TV or computer, gluttons to the entertainment we are fed, and take action.  That does not mean that we are not allowed to rest (even in front of the TV or computer), God commands that we rest; and yet, often resting replaces activity as the way we spend most of our time.  I challenge you to challenge yourself; to come up with your own oath that includes the words “do your best” and to live it out daily.  You will be happier, more fulfilled, full of energy, and more pleasing to God.

“Be the change you want to see in the world.” Ghandi
