Sunday's Message

Create Joy in Heaven

When I was a kid there was a pretty, brown-haired girl in my church named Patricia. During the invitation time one Sunday I was praying intensely for her to receive Christ. Next thing I knew she walked down the aisle and gave her life to Jesus! I imagined angels singing with joy in heaven that day. Since then I’ve been a firm believer in praying hard during each invitation time that people would publicly give their lives to Jesus.

Sunday I’m preaching on “Create Joy in Heaven” from Luke 15:1-10 in which Jesus tells the parables about the shepherd who left his 99 sheep to seek the lost sheep, and the woman who did all she could to find her lost coin. Their joy on finding that which was lost reflects an eternal truth. Jesus said, “There is joy in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who repents.” We should create joy in heaven by bringing people to Christ through the power of the Holy Spirit.

I remember a Sunday in which a visiting evangelist in the church where I grew up told me, “Keep praying for me during those invitation times. Keep praying that people will come to Jesus.” I was surprised he noticed me, but every Sunday since childhood I have prayed that angels could rejoice because someone was giving his or her life to Christ.

Please come Sunday, and during that crucial invitation time, pray that people give their lives to Jesus.

By the way, we have many wonderful events coming up! I’ve listed only some of them. Saturday we have a Yard Sale. Proceeds go to our Vacation Bible School and the Mexico Mission Trip. Sunday we have a Church Council meeting at 6:00. March 22, there’s a game night for everyone in the Fellowship Hall at 5:30. March 31 we’re having our Spring Celebration with a potluck followed by games such as basketball and volleyball. Please take advantage of each of these events in order to help create joy in heaven!

With love in Christ,

Jim Meek

A true calling from the One True God

Jesus said to him, “You still lack one thing. Sell everything you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.”

When he heard this, he became very sad, because he was very wealthy.  Jesus looked at him and said, “How hard it is for the rich to enter the kingdom of God!  Indeed, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of God.

Those who heard this asked, “Who then can be saved?” Jesus replied, “What is impossible with man is possible with God.

Luke 18:22-27 NIV

What do you value more than God?  In the case of the rich young ruler, he valued his possessions greatly.  The account in Luke does not tell us whether the ruler followed through on Jesus’s command, but it does tell us that he was very sad.  Jesus throughout His ministry tells His followers that they must be willing to give up everything they value in order to follow Him.  Parents, spouses, children, careers, and any other blessing provided by the Father, should never come between us and Him.  The Old Testament provides plenty of examples of mothers giving their children to service for God.   We cannot imagine this choice, and God does not call us to it often, but how would you respond?

We all hope that we would respond with quick obedience to a direct order from God, but I know that I, at least, would have some major issues with the request.  I don’t know if I could give my daughter to serve the church, nor leave my wife to serve Him, nor sell all my possessions to give to the poor.  I believe that wrestling with God can be the right response to these kinds of high callings.  Moses argued with God over why he was the one being called to save the Israelites, Peter gave up his integrity in place of his life during Jesus’s trial, and Jesus prayed for the Father to take this cup from Him; yet each chose to have His will be done over theirs.  We must be sure that the calling is from God, not a whim, not born from depression, not a self-serving escape, but a true calling from the One True God.  If it is truly from Him, then no matter how much it costs to follow, the rewards for all involved are more rewards.  Pray, ask for Christian counsel, listen to the answers and be sure, you’re sure, you’re sure, then act without hesitation, and God will reward you.

Upcoming Lessons:

  • Sunday 3/17:
    • You’re Gifted: Let’s Celebrate

Event Updates:

  • Family Game Night, Friday, 3/22, 5:30-8:30 pm
  • Easter Lock-In, Friday to Saturday, 4/19-4/20

Prayer Requests:

  •  The Easter Lock-In: I am a firm believer in the “go all the way, or don’t bother” plan for décor and theme, and for this lock-in, we’re going all the way.  I pray for wisdom as we work that our efforts would be rewarded with teenagers excited in coming to our church.
  • Wisdom: There is a lot on our plates as we move to Easter, and I pray that my leadership team would be blessed with great wisdom as we choose how we invest our time.
