Relate To The Nation
May 26, 2019

Nathan Hale graduated from Yale with honors at a young age. He became a lieutenant in the 7th Connecticut Regiment during the Revolutionary War. When the British were besieging New York General Washington needed to know when they would attack & where. He needed some spies. Only Hale volunteered. He went behind enemy lines posing as a schoolteacher. He was eventually caught in a tavern with the British plans & was condemned to death by hanging. The night before his death he asked for a Bible & a clergyman. The British General Howe denied him these requests. On the morning of September 22, 1776 Hale was marched along Post Road in Manhattan and hanged. His last words were, “I only regret that I have but one life to lose for my country.” He was 21 years old.

We must be willing to give our lives for our nation, our neighbors, our church and our God. As we die to selfishness we become free to love with his love.

This Memorial Day weekend we remember those who have died for our country. Sunday I’m preaching on “Relate to the Nation” from Romans 13:1-10 where Paul teaches us to submit to our national leaders and to love others.

I thank God for our nation and for those who’ve put themselves in harm’s way for our nation. I thank God for my church and my Lord and for those who’ve risked their lives for our faith. May we consider ourselves crucified with Christ so that Christ may live and love through us (Galatians 2:20"!

With love in Christ,

Jim Meek

YOUTH UPDATE
May 26, 2019

LOVE AS I HAVE LOVED YOU

The Greatest Commandments: “Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.” Matthew 22:37-40 NIV

The Great Commission: “Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” Matthew 28:18-20 NIV

Our youth seek to grow kinder by ministry.  This portion of our purpose statement is derived from Jesus’ command to love your neighbor as yourself and his refinement of that command: to love one another as He loved us (John 13:34 NIV).  As we studied this goal of growing kinder, we first needed to define our terms.  We define love as investing of yourself in others; ministry as an area of service, or the act of serving; and, kindness as an attitude of joy as one acts.  These definitions allow us to rephrase our purpose to be that we seek to have greater joy in service by investing in others.  These investments could be made up of time, work, goods, thoughts, prayers, or any other commodity that it costs us to give.  We give of these things first because God called us to, then because He rewards us with joy and satisfaction as we serve.

On Mother’s Day we gave out cookies that the students had made to all of the ladies of the church.  Giving the cookies alone would have been good, and been a form of ministry, but our true goal was to make each lady smile when we gave her the cookie.  We wanted each person to feel loved and appreciated, and were attempting to reach that goal in as kind a way as possible.  We could have simply left the cookies on the table with a note, or handed them out while looking down at our shoes to avoid eye contact, but instead the instruction was to smile and say “Happy Mother’s Day!”  The kids were uncomfortable to interact but by acting the way they did, they grew.  Kindness is shown through interaction with others, and can only be grown by testing it.  As we look to the future of our ministry, we will always be looking for opportunities to grow in kindness.
