Sunday's Message
November 12, 2017

We weep with those who lost loved ones and were wounded from the shooting at First Baptist Church, Sutherland Springs, Texas.  So many things that happen touch God’s heart as well as ours.  In Jeremiah and Ephesians 4:30 we have images of a grieving God.

Many in the media have said that we must do more than pray over such tragedies.  In some ways I agree with them.  We must act through God’s power as well as pray.  Yet these people are mistaken if their intent is to disparage prayer.  Tennyson wrote, “More things are wrought by prayer than this world dreams of.”  Almighty God is ready to respond to our prayers.  There is so much pain on earth because people have freedom to be evil with horrible results.  But people are also free to do good.  One of the greatest deeds we can do is pray.

Part of that prayer must be thanksgiving.  This Sunday I’m preaching on “Be in the Minority Who Thank God” from Luke 17:11-19.  While the world despairs, we are commanded to give thanks.  In 1 Thessalonians 5:16-19 Paul says,

Rejoice always; pray without ceasing; in everything give thanks for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.  Do not quench the Spirit.

Amidst such tragedy how can we give thanks?  We can because we have the stubborn belief that “all things work together for good for those who love God, who are the called according to his purpose” (Romans 8:29).  God sees things from an eternal perspective.  We in the trenches can only see what’s right in front of us.  We must give way to God’s greater view of the battlefield.

This Sunday I’m preaching on “Be in the Minority Who Thank God” from Luke 17:11-19 where one of ten healed lepers returned to thank Jesus.  Please come and learn to give thanks even in a leprous world wherein we learn to weep and rejoice simultaneously.

With love in Christ,
Dr. Jim Meek
