SING ABOUT GOD

When I was working on my doctorate in seminary, I had an archaeology teacher named Bill Tolar. I loved him! When I started a church in Reno, he came all the way from Fort Worth, Texas to preach for me. He was a Cajun, and he was brilliant! When he was growing up in a small town in Louisiana, he had a teacher who told him that he should read the world’s bestseller, “A book,” she said, “that everyone buys but no one reads.”
“What book is that?” he said.
“The Bible.”
So, each morning after he finished his newspaper route, he’d put his bike up and read the Bible on his family’s front porch. In time, God got a hold of him. He was born again, and in time, he became the Dean of Theology at the world’s largest seminary, and that’s how he became my professor.
His story and his life inspire me to sing to God, “How Great Thou Art!”
Sunday, I’ll be preaching on “Sing about God” from Exodus 15:1-13. In the sermon I’ll use some material from one of Dr. Tolar’s messages, “Creation: Choice or Chance” about the logic of believing that God is creator of the universe. Please come. We’ll talk about “Sing of God’s Greatness,” verses 1-12, and “Sing of God’s Strength,” verse 13. It’s about the great salvation story in the Old Testament when God delivered Israel from the Egyptian army by giving his people passage through the Red Sea.
