RENEW RELATIONSHIPS
January 12, 2025
John Adams and Thomas Jefferson were good friends while they were declaring independence for the United States of America. However, when Adams was running against Jefferson for President, they had a falling out that lasted 16 years. Finally, Dr. Benjamin Rush, a fellow signer of the Declaration of Independence, successfully got them to renew their relationship. That renewed friendship lasted until their death on July 4, 1826, the fiftieth anniversary of the public reading of the Declaration. During that renewed friendship they’d written 158 letters to each other! When Adams was dying, he said, “Jefferson still lives!” Actually, Jefferson had died 5 hours earlier. However, their renewed friendship can inspire us to renew broken relationships.
Sunday I’m preaching on “Renew Relationships” from Genesis 33:1-17. We’ll talk about “Take the Initiative,” verses 1-3; “Receive Love,” verses 4-11; and “Be Wise,” verses 12-17. It’s the amazing story of Jacob being reconciled with his brother Esau. Those two men were total opposites, and Jacob had done his brother wrong, but their reconciliation is touching and it provides some valuable lessons. Please come and help us worship the God of renewed relationships. Meanwhile, pray about a relationship that you need to renew in this new year through the power of the Holy Spirit.
Love,
Jim Meek
