JUDGE NOT

While Abraham Lincoln was giving his Second Inaugural Address the sun broke through a cloudy sky as though to announce God’s blessings on what was being said. The President knew that the horrible Civil War would soon end. His hope was that the victorious North would not judge the South but rather accept it as the loving father accepted the prodigal son in Jesus’ parable.
Lincoln closed his speech of forgiveness with these famous words:
With malice toward none; with charity for all; with firmness in the right as God gives us to see the right, let us strive on to finish the work we are in; to bind up the nation’s wounds; to care for him who shall have borne the battle, for his widow and his orphan – to do all which may achieve and cherish a just and lasting peace among ourselves and with all nations.
After the death of 750,000 in the Civil War and the horrible psychological and economic toil, how could one side forgive the other? Yet Lincoln stated that forgiveness must take place. There must be no maliciousness, no hatred, only love. The North won, thus stating that the South should not separate, but be one with the North. This oneness must be achieved through love.
In order for peace to reign in our homes, church, society and nation, we must not judge others. We have to discern through the leadership of the Holy Spirit, but we must love everyone, also through the Holy Spirit. Loving someone means we turn from criticizing to complimenting. We turn from tearing down to building up.
Sunday I’m preaching on “Judge Not” from Romans 14:12-20. We’ll look at “Judge Not in Order to Refrain from Offense,” verses 12-13; “Walk in Love,” verses 14-15; and “Seek Peace,” verses 16-20. Please come and help us love each other unconditionally.
