Norman Borlaug grew up on an Iowa farm with his Norwegian parents during the Depression. He knew what it was to work hard and produce very little, but he also knew what it was to depend on God. His family was completely dedicated to Christ.
His dad told him that he was too smart to stay on the farm, so he went to the University of Minneapolis, getting his PHD in Plant Pathology. His compassion for the poor farmers in Mexico led him to design a kind of wheat that resists disease and drought. It ended up saving an estimated one billion lives around the world. This gained Dr. Borlaug a Nobel Prize. When he received the prize, he thanked God for his creation and leadership.
Sunday I’m preaching on “Thank God with Others” from Psalm 106:1-12. We’ll look at “Thank God for His Goodness,” verses 1-3; and “Thank God with Your Nation,” verses 4-12. The author of this text is probably leading Israel back into the Promised Land after a sojourn in Babylon. He begins by quoting David’s song of thanksgiving as the king brought the ark of the covenant (the throne of God) to Jerusalem. As we celebrate God’s presence and enter the Spirit-filled life, may we likewise thank God together!
