ACCEPT THE GIFT WHO BURST INTO HISTORY

December 15, 2024

I love history!  Everything has a history: theology, music, literature, theatre, sports, politics, science, math, what people eat, drink, wear and where they live.  On Christmas some of my favorite presents evoked history.  I remember a toy stagecoach with horses and riders on top of my stocking one year – straight out of the history of the Old West.  I remember another year seeing huge, green army men under the tree, still fighting a World War II battle.  One of my favorite presents was a large, toy Civil War cannon that shot plastic cannonballs.  Very cool!

The Bible is full of history.  It tells, for example, about Gods’ gift to the world, a baby who changed everything!  The whole dating of history turns on his coming (B.C. and A.D.).

Ancient Roman historians predicted this coming.  Suetonius wrote, “There had spread over the whole Orient an old belief that men coming from Judea would rule the world.”  That would be Jesus, born in Bethlehem of Judea.  His disciples would go from Judea to change world history.

Tacitus wrote, “In ancient records of priests there was a prediction of how at this very time … rulers coming from Judea were to acquire universal empire.”  That would be Jesus and his disciples, creating an empire that has its followers today who will reign with them forever (cf. Daniel 7:13-14; Romans 8:16-18)

Sunday I’m preaching on “Accept the Gift Who Burst into History” from Matthew 1:16-25.  We’ll look at “Accept the Messiah,” verses 16-17; “Accept the Savior from Sin,” verses 18-21; and “Accept the Long Awaited One,” verses 22-25.  Please invite as many people as you can so that Christ can burst into their history and provide them with eternal, abundant life!

I appreciate all those who are working so hard to present to the community our Live Nativity.  Please come and bring as many people as possible.  It’s our gift to Christ at Christmas, and our Christmas card to the community.

Love,

Jim Meek
