O, WORSHIP THE KING
December 22, 2024
When I was a kid, I saw maybe the strangest double feature of all time. The musical “Bye, Bye Birdie!” starring Ann-Margret was showing with “Genghis Khan” starring Omar Sharif. That day I fell in love with Ann-Margret, but I was already fascinated by Genghis Khan.
The Mongolian Khan’s real name was Temujin, meaning blacksmith. But when he began carving out his empire, he took on the title Genghis Khan, which means Universal Ruler. His father was poisoned to death by Tatars when Temujin was 8 years old, but he eventually killed his half-brother to take over the leadership of his tribe. Together, he and his men slew 40 million people. He carved out the greatest contiguous empire in history, stretching from the Pacific Ocean to the Caspian Sea at the edge of Europe. It was twice the size of the Roman Empire. Amazingly, the Khan allowed religious freedom, in fact encouraging Christians to come and evangelize his people.
The true Universal Ruler, however, is Jesus. All of history is dated on his coming. The cross upon which he died is the most recognizable symbol in the world. Christianity is the largest religion in the world. When a person gives his life to Jesus, he rules from that person’s heart. One day he’ll come again to physically rule over a new heaven and earth that will be without pain, sorrow or death.
Our response should be to worship the king! Sunday I’m preaching about the wise men who traveled 1,678 miles to worship him. Please put forth the effort to come and worship him this Sunday when I’ll be preaching on “O, Worship the King!” from Matthew 2:1-12. We’ll look at “Make an Effort to Worship the King,” verses 1-2; “Beware of False Claims of Worship,” verses 3-8; and “Have Joy in Worship,” verses 9-12.
My eternal thanks go to all who worked on the Nativity! The wind wreaked havoc on the sets late Friday night, but people worked beautifully to get everything back and running, and we had perfect weather on Saturday and Sunday nights, and large crowds. Praise God!
Love,
Jim Meek
