RECEIVE THE GIFT OF GLORY
December 8, 2024
Peter Marshall was a poor worker in the gloomy coalmines of Scotland. But he saw the glory of God’s calling into the ministry, so he took classes at night. Then a cousin paid his way to America so he could get a better education. He became a pastor and married Catherine Wood, who eventually became a famous author. Peter became chaplain for the U.S. Senate.
Peter and Catherine had a son whom they named Peter. He likewise saw the glory of God’s calling into the ministry. He became a pastor and author with a nationwide ministry.
Sir David Manuel saw the glory of God’s calling into Christian ministry as well. He headed publishing houses and wrote numerous Christian books and articles.
Manuel and Marshall both graduated from Yale, and coauthored “The Light and the Glory,” the history of America from 1492 till the establishment of the United States. At the beginning of the book, they quote a letter from John Adams to his wife on the passing of the Declaration of Independence in the midst of a brutal Revolutionary War. John states,
I am well aware of the toil and blood and treasure that it will cost us to maintain this Declaration, and support and defend these States. Yet through all the gloom I can see the rays of ravishing light and glory.
Sunday I’m preaching on “Receive the Gift of Glory” from Isaiah 9:1-7. We’ll look at “See Gloom Turn to Glory,” verses 1-5; and “Receive the Child of Glory,” verses 6-9. Through the gloom of longer nights let’s celebrate the glory of Christmas! Through the gloom of a fallen world, let’s celebrate the Light of the World! Please join us Sunday!
By the way, please sign up to participate in our Live Nativity December 13-15 from 6:30 to 8:30. Also, invite as many people as possible. It’s a Christmas card to our community that people will never forget. It tells the true meaning of Christmas. Thus, it serves as our gift to Christ at his birthday.
Love,
Jim Meek
