THANK GOD FOR THE SPIRIT AND THE SON
November 17, 2024
Some people have trouble believing the Trinity, that Father, Son and Holy Spirit are one God. In Early Christianity Arius promoted the concept that the Father created the Son, and that together they created the universe. Arius promoted a song that went, “Once the Son did not exist.” It had a catchy tune, and people sang it often. Those who believed in the Trinity countered it with a different song that is sung in some churches today:
Glory to the Father, the Son and the Holy Ghost.
As it was in the beginning, is now and forever shall be
In the world without end.
One of the champions of the Trinity was Athanasia. Because he was short and of dark complexion he was called the Black Dwarf. He was persecuted for his stance, but he insisted that Father, Son and Holy Spirit are one God. I compare it to California, Arizona, Nevada, three states but one nation.
Paul said in Romans 8:9,
You are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you. But if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Him.
Paul speaks of the Spirit, the Spirit of God and the Spirit of Christ as though they are one, because indeed they are one God. Thus, Jesus was able to say, “When you’ve seen me you’ve seen the Father” (John 14:9), and was able to affirm Thomas’ declaration of him as, “My Lord, and my God!” (John 20:28). After all, had not Isaiah said,
For a child will be born to us, as son will be given to us;
And the government will be upon his shoulders;
And his name will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,
Eternal Father, Prince of Peace.
When we pray to the Father, we’re praying to the Son and the Holy Spirit. When we depend on the Father, we’re depending on the Son and the Holy Spirit. The three are one.
Sunday I’m preaching on “Thank God for the Spirit and the Son” from John 16:5-22. We’ll talk about “Thank God for the Spirit” in verses 5-15; and ‘Thank God for Jesus” in verses 16-22. Please join us in pubic thanksgiving!
Love,
Jim Meek
