GROW IN DOING RIGHT

Corporal Dave Smith was an infantryman in Iraq in 2004.  Afterward he was in college while his friends were still risking their lives overseas.  He was lonely and miserable.  Then he met Clay, a fellow Marine.  They had a meaningful time overcoming Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder together, until suddenly Clay committed suicide.

Dave was devastated.  Filled with alcohol, he put a shotgun in his mouth.  Then he thought of the misery that people felt over Clay’s suicide.  He pulled the gun away from his mouth.

In a few days he received a letter from a group called Warrior 100-klilometer, a veterans’ mountain-bike ride program.  He joined the organization, and God used it as a springboard for him to help others.

Dave knows God saved his life, and now God has directed him to serving other veterans.  He also joined an around-the-world missionary trip.  He is growing in doing the right thing.

Sunday I’m preaching on “Grow in Doing Right” from 2 Peter 1:1-11.  We’ll look at “Know the Righteous One,” verses 1-3; “Receive Christ’s Righteousness,” verse 4; and “Multiply Righteousness,” verses 5-11.  Let’s learn from Peter, the Holy Spirit and each other how to grow in righteousness.  We need it, and so does our hurting world.
